That's what I don't get. You have a multitrillion dollar industry in IT that people are comfortable checking their bank account statements with and pay their mortgage through a mobile phone yet think it'd be insecure if voting was implemented. It is true that data breaches happen everyday but it's also true that companies for instance like American Express have a global WAN with so much redundancy built in that their downtime for maintenance is some ridiculously short amount of time like 30 seconds per year and don't get breaches unless it's from a 3rd party not apart of their WAN.

Same is true for a company like VISA. All data breaches are the result of either lack of budget to properly implement a secure network infrastructure or have poor security policies and implementation. The companies that take IT seriously though? They have so many layers of security built into their infrastructure and have properly trained employees that follow best practice security policies that they don't get breached despite the worst intentions from inside and outside nefarious bad faith actors.

So to pre-suppose that the U.S government is incapable of developing a safe and secure online way to vote that maintains better integrity than existing systems in place is an asinine take to have. It can be done.

    Academic discussion.

The answer is voter suppression. If you make it easy to vote the GOP goes poof.

This and you'd have the odd tik tok video of someone having their dog/infant voting and people would lose their minds.

Let's ban gun and ammunition advertising because anyone who needs to be reminded of their second amendment rights should not own a gun.

Anyone who is unaware of their fifth amendment rights should not be reminded of them and thusly be allowed to incriminate themselves.

Didn't say forbid them from voting, just don't encourage them if they are not self-motivated.

I honestly can't trust the government to implement a Nationwide online voting scheme that safeguards privacy, security, and verifiability. The stakes would be 50-100 times higher and harder than Obamacare online registration.

The roi for hacking an electronic voting system is much higher than say, corrupting a ballot box by physically hacking a digital device on site or "stealing a mailbox."

Plus, there are coverage and ease of use issues that underserved or "underknowledged" groups would claim as unfair or not equitable. A lot of these five concerns also collide against each other.

In short, it's a logistical and software development nightmare that would likely take five years to a decade to rollout plus the same amount of time to iron out.

Can't solve all of this with blog posts, TedTalks, and vague crypto white papers with a bunch of hackers coding away in their garages "within a couple of weeks"

Why does anyone want online voting? The paper trail is actually an important thing. Mail voting gives you the convenience of online voting but it has a paper trail behind it.

And in well run states, you can just go to the secretary of state's website and check your ballot status to see if it was received/challenged/denied, etc.. Online voting is stupid in the same way that electronic voting machines with no paper trail was stupid. It serves no advantage and only creates security and audit issues.

Why wouldn't it be a good idea to plan 5 to 10 years down the road for an infrastructure to exist that would be safe to use as a voting mechanism and to make it more accessible for every able citizen to vote? Will elections stop happening 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 years from now? Why not plan ahead? Isn't part of being proactive to anticipate possible negative reactions by devising multiple plans to possible future outcomes, weighing out the Pros/Cons to each plan, picking the one with the most Pros and least Cons, then chiseling away until you can properly address the cons to your best laid out plan? It can be done. It should be done and it should be such a common thing for every U.S. citizen to know how to securely vote, that it's as common as saying, "I'll just Google it" to even your least informed voting populace.

It's only by design that you have an uninformed voting population at all. It's only by design that voting can be as challenging as it is for some citizens in the United States. It's not unreasonable to firmly believe that voting can be easier while still safe, secure and more readily accessible to even your most challenged and/or least informed voting population.

"paper trail" (or auditable trail) should be a hard requirement for any voting method

having it for online voting is a technical challenge that can be solved and will be solved

    fun facts
    - 2016: about 25% of registered voters lived in jurisdictions that used electronic voting machines without paper trails
    - 2020: that dropped down to <9% (because of the 2016 Russia attack on our voting systems). GA and AZ audits were possible because of paper trails.
    - 2022: TBD. I think some jurisdictions in TX, KY, TN, and LA still have no paper trail. Yes, all are red states.
    - a few jurisdictions are using limited online voting today
