Steve Bannon sentenced to four months in prison for criminal contempt of Congress

Former top Trump adviser Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison and a $6,500 fine on Friday morning, months after a jury took less than three hours to find him guilty of two charges of criminal contempt of Congress—Willful Failure to Appear for Testimony, and Willful Failure to Provide Records—for his refusal to comply with subpoenas from the Jan. 6 committee. Bannon’s sentence is technically two four-month sentences to be served concurrently.

Bannon asked for probation or home confinement, but by statute, he faced a mandatory 30 days in prison, and the Department of Justice asked for six months, citing his “bad-faith strategy of defiance and contempt.”

In theory this would set a precedent for jailing witnesses that don't comply with congressional subpoenas.

But in reality we know this will only apply to Bannon or other MAGA types.

It already is a crime to not comply with congressional subpoenas.

Lois Lerner and Eric Holder might disagree

I'll have to refresh my memory on the Lerner situation but Holder while found in contempt of Congress a judge did decline on that charge while also sayign that the DOJ had to turn over documents.

In the case of Bannon he had defied multiple subpoena's and was found guilty in a trial. In both cases there were trials. If you believe there was bias then it lies in the judiciary and not in Congress or the DOJ.

So if you think Justice is not being enforced fairly do you have a problem with Trump pardoning people like Bannon and Flynn or saying if he gets back into office he'll issue a blanket pardon for Jan. 6th, which wasn't non-violent?

For that matter why should Trump not get prosecuted for things like using campaign funds to pay off Stormy Daniels even though he wrote the check while Michael Cohen did jail time?

I have a problem with any President pardoning associates, or using those pardoned associates afterwards to commit more crimes. It's like giving a mob boss authority to pardon the rest of the mob anytime they commit a crime. It leaves the door open for a President to use people to commit crimes, by telling them he will pardon them if they get caught. Trump pardoned lots of big donors and associates, and their crimes were huge compared to a corner drug dealer or neighborhood burgler.
