Im guessing they're going to use their veto on the security council to protect Iran from future sanctions or resolutions.

Maybe old news, but this guy is a professional military analyst at the Royal Danish Defence College and former naval officer. He gives a pretty nerdy and nuanced breakdown on why he believes Russia did it.

He certainly does and his logic seems sound. If you'd like to break down what is incorrect about his assertions, I'd love to hear about it.

“Is this a war of liberation of Ukraine from Nazis or a conquest to bolster national reserves of washing machines for the Russian people”, one anonymous Russian military leader is quoted during a debate about changing language used to describe the war in Ukraine. Sources say the washing machine message has greater appeal to non-Muscovite Russians and should bolster what has otherwise been a lackluster limited mass mobilization of Russian men ages 18 to death. Tomorrow, we meet with Dzmitry a former Microsoft software engineer based out of Moscow and his friends, all who have broken ankles and are not eligibile for conscription, at the local McDonalds turned Vkusno i tochka as we discuss the importance of winning this war for everyday Russians. - The Moscow Times 10/21/2022

    Russia denies using Iranian drones
Iran denies selling drones to Russia
Iranian drones are being used to terrorize Ukrainians

    All three statements are true.

Why Iran is directly helping Russia is an interesting question but an even more compelling question is why does Saudi Arabia appear to be helping Russia with energy markets?

Russia and Iran have some mutual issues regarding Syria and with both countries under western sanctions there is mutual interest in helping each other economically. Saudi Arabia though has been on the other side from Russia and Iran in Syria and Iran is embroiled in several conflicts versus Saudi Arabia. Also the Saudis and Israelis have been getting closer as both recognize Iran as a common enemy. Iran's involvement is leading to Israel aiding Ukraine.

The most I can guess is that Saudi Arabia sees a chance to make money and also to hurt Biden politically. They were very stung by criticism from Biden over Khashoggi and this represents a chance to get back at him.
