[ClutchFans] Why Alperen Sengun will come off the bench

If Alpi truly deserves the starting spot, then he's gonna force his way into that role by outplaying Fernando, the same way that he started last year outplaying Theis.

Giannis started his second year on the bench, and then took Kris Middleton's spot in the starting lineup 10 games into the year. Jokic started his second year as part of a twin towers lineup next to Nurkic, got sent to the bench, and then won back his spot and got Nurkic salary dumped off the team entirely based on his play.

If Fernando is as middling as he is expected to be, the difference should be obvious during their play on the court. Even if he's the nominal starter now, it matters much more who's starting in game 41 rather than in game 1.

And if Fernando is actually good enough to hold down a starting spot while on a Hinkie-Special? What an absolute steal for the Rockets, finding a bargain-bin rotation player as a throw-in to a mid-season salary dump.

 

i think he will play 25+ tonight depending on foul trouble. He finds fouls where they shouldn't be found

But there's a catch: he deserves a starting spot at least in this bottom feeder of a team, but not within this travesty of a system.
His offense is his forte: his passes, court vision, post moves, screens etc etc. but with this starting backcourt, a traffic cone could do the 5's offense job except for a lob or two, so he's redundant.
As for orchestration, we are trusting KPJ with it instead, because apparently Silas & KPJ are a thing now and it's so cute.
That's why... Fernando.

 

Just when I think it cannot get any weirder...well, it always does.

So you'll be told to develop a shot and stay out of foul trouble and cut on the turnovers. You work on your shot, come back and hit your 3pt shots in preseason, cut your fouls and turnovers down throughout the season only to be replaced by another center who fouls way more. You will be told that you haven't shown enough progress over the summer, only to be replaced by a player who has not improved over 3 years.

Well, it is Green's team and it will be. So if he says Bruno, it is Bruno. But all these justifications above are as dumb as it can get.

 

No, this is not true imo.

This is 100% about touches and priority. KPJ is their PG, he will TOUCH the ball a lot. JG is their star in the making, he NEEDS to touch the ball a lot and will. Jabari needs to pan out, and if he is anything like his 1 pre-season game, he SHOULD touch the ball a lot at least as a finisher.

That leaves 2 starters. They need to either be GREAT finishers INSIDE and OUT, or not care about touching the ball at all.

Bruno is the later. Alpi isn't, or at least, shouldn't be right now.

I don't like it (see my initial comment on page 1), but i get it.

Alpi can't outperform Bruno to move into the starting lineup. He's already done that many times over.

Put Alpi in a position to succeed. If that's off the bench running the offense with the second unit then so be it.

He's very fun to watch and I think he has a bright future, but centers who can't shoot and aren't good defenders struggle to find their role in the NBA. I've compared him to Domantis Sabonis, but he could be Enes Kanter or Al Jefferson if he doesn't expand his game. A center who only contributes with the ball in his hands can quickly become unplayable.

If benching him is an effort to have him be the defacto PG of the second unit then I will approve. As I have said before we have to be deliberate in our game plan to let him run the offense and build an offense round him for much of the game.

I’m fine with this. Sengun was somewhat unimpressive in the preseason. He has a lot of room for improvement, and he can continue to grow in a bench role.
