I think we all know what his value was (intelligent people). Nobody thought he was getting paid like anything more than a 6th man except his ignorant fan base. Now, it's over and he can either prove his contract or end up a ghost. Hopefully it's the former and not the latter

If you recall, I've always said discussing his leaving the games and throwing tantrums was unnecessary.

He's moved beyond that shiit and there's more than enough questions in the numbers and efficiency that it's almost irrelevant.

Bottom line, the kid is ultra talented and has physical gifts in size and quickness that make him a unique prospect worth investing in. He's shown the upside with several great games .... you don't put up 50-10 by being a scrub.

He's just got to become a consistent and efficient player. He put up 50 but bookended that a week prior with 4 and a week after just 8 which you might call ancient history. But not much has changed since .... In 61 starts last season, he scored in single digits 15 times while he had 16 games over 20 Here's the Game Logs

If that isn't the model of inconsistency, I don't know what is.

I hope the guy becomes great .... he plays for the franchise I've followed since 1970 ....

I don't think you can make sigs invisible. I took mine off by simply deleting it (you have to "save changes") since I technically won the bet.

If anyone makes a bet in the future I wouldn't recommend signature. AV is probably better. I'm not collecting om my win so the board doesn't have to suffer lol

    https://theathletic.com/3707729/2022/10/19/jalen-green-kevin-porter-rockets/

    • Porter’s new four-year, $82.5 million extension is a structure that hasn’t been seen before in the NBA — certainly not with the money of that magnitude. But as has been the stance for months, the Rockets have maintained the notion that Porter is a priority and is considered a huge part of their core, along with Green and Jabari Smith Jr. Both sides met multiple times over the last few months going over the unique layout of the deal. Here is the full breakdown, as The Athletic understands:

    1. Each year has a base of $15.86 million with incentives for both availability (minutes played) and team success. The incentives are divided into two categories, both worth $2.37 million. Year 1 is fully guaranteed.

    2. Starting July 1, 2023 (after 2022-23 season), a portion of Porter’s Year 2 money will begin to guarantee. Then throughout the 2023-24 season, the guarantee amount will increase by increments. By July 1, 2023 Porter’s partial guarantee rises to $1 million, $3 million by the first game of the new season and $6 million five days after the February trade deadline if he’s still on the roster.

    3. There are different thresholds for team success, and multiple ways Porter can reach those incentives. One way is team wins, another is if Houston makes the Play-In Tournament and another is if it makes the playoffs outright.

    4. Additionally, Porter can see his Year 2 (2024-25) salary fully guaranteed if the Rockets finish as a top-eight seed in the Western Conference in 2023-24, make the playoffs and he plays a certain number of minutes.

    5. Regardless, Years 2 and 3 of the deal will be guaranteed by June 30, 2024. Year 4 is a team option that fully guarantees after June 30, 2025.

I'm of the same view. Though, I would say this contract seems to be more geared towards protecting the Rockets from off the court issues than talent issues. If Porter doesn't improve much and is only worth $14M/year (though will reach likely to earn incentives, say contract will pay $18M), Rockets may have to decide between cutting him (but not able to use $18M on someone else depending on cap situation) and overpaying him by $4M. The Rockets are banking on him being worth that contract if he doesn't let off the court issues derail him.

Does anyone have to be wrong here? Can both sides actually be right? From my point of view it seems like both sides got what they wanted. KPJ enthusiasts see this as a 4 year 80mil extension, they got what they wanted, they won. He’s a part of the core, part of the long term plan, and he’s going to be great. He’s going to earn the contract.

KPJ skeptics also got what they wanted since only one year is guaranteed. The issue with his inconsistent play and the uncertainty of his future is alleviated by the structure of this deal. If anything happens they can get rid of him after one year.

I think everyone wins and everyone should be happy about this outcome. The structure of the deal is so unique that everyone gets what they want.

Has anyone actually seen this alleged contract or are we just trusting random tweets now?

I would argue the only people who were definitely wrong were those who said he wasn't going to get a new deal at all or those who said let him walk if he wants more than his cap hit. There weren't too many people who were that stupid.... but they certainly exist. If there was anyone suggesting he get a max deal now, they were equally wrong.... but I'm not sure anyone said that.

The majority of rational posters correctly identified what an early extension would look like, that it would be something between 15-20 million per season.

The "anything over 12 million would be a massive overpay" crowd were wrong too, but not as embarrassingly wrong as those others I pointed out so they should get a bit of a pass.

Basically all Rockets fans should be thrilled by the deal, it's good for KPJ, it's good for his teammates, it's good for the FO.

I think there were a couple of guys on each extreme who were clearly wrong(and some of them are still acting like they were right, when they had some laughable claims/comparisons/predictions), but I think the majority of people fall into the “we can both claim to be right” category.

Exactly but for some reason one side is denigrating his contract at every turn, you got somebody on here saying its the most team friendly deal in the history of the NBA as if this contract is terrible.

The other side was always talking about a contract in this range, so It's not really a matter of both sides IMO.

Yes. I was wrong in that I thought the Rockets would not be worried about a RFA offer with guaranteed years. I did not think KPJ would sign a contract like this. The people that were right were the ones that highly believe in his talent, but the off court stuff scared them a lot.
