I've always maintained Trump for ran for president to build his brand but quickly realized he had a real shot of winning. Presidency is profitable for him. When I say I don't care about scandals like this, I really think it's just insignificant. I do care about his election denial stupidity because it really is a threat to Democracy as we saw on Jan 6th. Unfortunately it's not just about him but Republicans who don't respect our system in terms of civil disagreement. They don't really believe the election was stolen, they don't believe their opposition has a rights. This didn't start with Trump, it's Rush Limbaugh's legacy
Yeah, it's scary stuff when a party decides truth and the people's votes aren't important, and taking power at all cost is the goal. It's hard to believe how much the party has changed since Trump got elected. They support candidates who are willing to spread the lies and propaganda, are willing to deny certification, and are willing to follow their commands. Education and experience are irrelevant. The more you lie, the shadier you are, the better you will be used to do the unthinkable. That's pretty obvious when you have people like MTG, Boebert, Walker, and the rest of the clowns getting their support. Ugh. Trump and all his pardoned felons are all peas in a pod, and the GOP party is full of the same types. Lying cons, criminals, sexual predators, adulterers, White Nationalists, Q Kooks, and hypocrites.
A President corruptly profiting off of their official including changing policies to benefit their personal business is not insignificant. It is as corrosive to the rule of law and as much a threat to principles as the election denial.
They literally lie about everything, there should be some type of charge but dam, over 1k per night when Eric says its free or a nominal fee? They cant help themselves, they will lie about the smallest of things let alone the BIG ones like an election, I would not trust one of them if they told me it was raining outside, I would assume its a lie.
That's why Trump using the name Truth Social for his website is hilarious. The man NEVER speaks the truth.
I don't know how corrupt it is, but I know it's ****ing stupid to argue a guy spent over $50 million to become president to make $1.4 million
What is stupid is believing the salary had anything to do with majority of the money Trump made/gifted.
If Trump owned a chain of hotels and was also a CEO of an unaffiliated corporation that wanted to hold company events at those hotels, he would be required to disclose the potential conflict of interest to the Board of Directors and probably in the 10-K filings as well. Most Boards would tell their CEO to do the events elsewhere to avoid any appearance of impropriety, though most CEOs would know better than to even put themselves in that position in the first place. If there was no alternative, they'd be tying themselves in knots to demonstrate that they took no undue benefit from the relationship. This would be doubly true if he was the leader of a nonprofit. In most government positions, it's a complete impossibility -- that would be the one company you couldn't do business with (see Harris County, the staffers facing indictment for self-dealing, and the county judge who might lose an election over it). It is only high officials for whom corporate governance is so weak as that. And sure I blame Trump for being corrupt and taking advantage of this impunity, but I'm mainly concerned about the impunity. Our checks and balances -- elections and impeachments -- are undermined by the dynamics of politics and are too weak to deter corruption at the top. whuza?
Sometimes typing on my phone fast comes out as a complete mess. Corrected: "A President corruptly profiting off of their official including changing policies to benefit their personal business is not insignificant."
I understand this but it's insignificant to Trump Company's overall revenue. There isnt a government requirement like what you're talking about apparently. I wdo questions how the Trump Organization was able to charge so much
the dizzing height of stupdity. the FAR, Federal Acquisition Regulation, is the primary regulation for use by all executive agencies in their acquisition of supplies and services with appropriated funds, including. but not limited to, the maximum amount the Gov't will pay for lodging The co owned by the disgraced former POTUS charged the Gov more than 5 times the max allowable amount
There is a government regulation. It's called the emoluments clause of the Constitution. A President cannot personally profit off of the office.
Trump did not spend $50M to become President. I'm assuming he "loaned" his campaign money, which can then be paid back via campaign donations. All the wealthy candidates structure stuff like this (see Oz for the most recent example I'm aware of), don't see why Trump would be any different.
The emoluments clause doesn't say this. It says an office holder can't receive payment from a foreign state or it's rulers Edit: I do see there is a domestic emoluments clause. I think but it says personal benefits. Trump's business is providing and receiving compensation
He didn't spend any money to become President. He's not even spending any money on legal fees for all the **** that he did as President. All of that is being funded by his various grifter organizations. It's legal - he's just tricking people into donating to the GOP but using it for himself.
One important locus of this conduct was the president’s Washington, DC, hotel. By one count, the hotel has hosted officials from more than 33 countries, and the hotel made millions off foreign governments
I get it -- you're acknowledging it may be wrong but arguing it's not big. I'd agree it's not big volumetrically, but argue that it is significant and you should care about it. Corruption is a nation-killer and I'd argue that our ability so far to keep government corruption low vis-a-vis other nations has been a key ingredient to the US' success in the world. But when you have a leader like Trump who engages in corruption (in this and in many other ways) and is not held accountable, it encourages other corruption from future presidents and other functionaries down the food chain. Trump isn't the only problem here -- we see it in the other branches too (potential for insider trading in Congress leaps immediately to mind) -- but he's a particularly high-profile and aggressive culprit. If we can't manage to deliver a smack down to high officials who cross the line, corruption will grow and our democratic voice, our place on the world stage, and our financial wellbeing will eventually suffer. Everything a high official does to leverage the power of his office for personal benefit is a big problem for governance even if it is only a small benefit to the offender.
yet another eg of PGab needing to heed Abe Lincoln's sage words, better to remain silent and be thought of as a fool, than to speak to remove all doubts.
