I agree with that sentiment however how is that relevant to this deal? They signed him and have a out incase signing a big contract gets to his head
Why? He's being paid like a 6th man. This is an extremely team friendly deal. I'm sure he wants to maximize it. If he's going to grow up now is the time. Let's see what he does this season. Obviously Scoot puts him on the bench but Let's see where we are. I like the direction
I think he accepted the best contract he could. Doubtful the open market would have been kind to him considering the team friendly deal. He's got to fit in
Based on what? Drafting Scoot will mean that as a starter, he would have lead us to one of the worst records in the league again. Half the team will have been drafted higher than him. There’s likely no other team in the league he would start for, so what is he going to do, demand a trade to another team where he will sit on the bench? That would ensure that he never gets past year 1 of his new deal.
the problem would be that this other Scoot character would not be as good as our Scoot, he’d just be younger and more potential-ly. So we’d be again in a John Wall situation: the better PG would be asked to be a reserve to the worse player. That’s messed-up. The good news is that KPJ’s contract would be way more tradeable than Wall’s… He could be traded…
If the team was only KPJ/Jabari/Sengun I would probably say tank for Henderson and move KPJ to SG. I don’t know if he can run a team like that I think Jalen allows the KPJ experiment to work. You can tell the older the get the more Green will want the ball and probably naturally work itself out. The players around KPJ last year were borderline g league players so I don’t blame him for going iso sometimes. He’s looked a lot better this preseason with a more established team If Stone would rather trust KPJ vs tanking one more year for Henderson, or a draft loaded with guards, then I gotta believe in him. I also like KPJ for injury insurance. God forbid injuries but it’s nice knowing that KPJ is capable of picking up the scoring if injury were to happen to Green or Jabari Just need to see that efficiency rise over the season
John Wall was a 10 year veteran, 5x All-Star, Top 10 all-time in assists who was making $40M a year with $90M still guaranteed over the two remaining years. He had earned the clout not to accept that role. KPJ is a career (3 year) replacement-level player. Not accepting any role jeopardizes his future.
Would you say the same about Jalen Green? Should he accept a bench role? Would it jeopardize his future if he didn't?
I wonder why people suddenly turn on Wall, he has done nothing majorly wrong other than protecting his money which every private citizen would do.
whatever comforts that insecure little ego of yours and everyone else who came in here talking out of their asses with the whole "haha where is the extension" then the kid gets it and it turns into "well its not even that good - haha i was right" pathetic.
I'm not sure what refusing a bench role for guys this young even involves. John Wall already had his financial security and most of his NBA legacy locked up. He can refuse a role and stay home all he wants. I will just assume that for these guys, refusing a role involves requesting a trade. But to answer the question, I doubt it would jeopardize Green's future. But, again, they aren't the same player. Green was drafted #2 overall with 4 years of team control left. KPJ was a player drafted #30 who was already on the verge of being out of the league when he was given to the Rockets for nothing. He already has a history that (rightly or not) is going to follow him and influence future decisions. What a team has invested in a player counts for a lot. The incident in Cleveland would likely have had a different outcome had they invested a top 5 pick in him. At this point, the Rockets have invested a lot of time and energy in KPJ, so he is going to get a little more leeway and support from them than he would from any other team in the league. If he were to destroy that with a refusal to accept a bench role on this team, you can bet his NBA career would be in jeopardy.
Hey Kudos to you for not squirming your way out of it and then looking for an ego stroke in making fun of the deal. It is a very creative extension and I'd bet wont be the last of its kind. Bottom line is if KPJ continues to play well and stay clean he will end up making way more than this and that in itself means that he is the type of player you can win with.
I certainly wasn't taking a shot at Wall. I'm just saying he had options in refusing a role that younger players don't really have.
I feel sorry for you. You need to come onto an antiquated sports talk forum and look for "likes" and everything that seems to be missing in your life while talking about the famous people you know and how much money you make and the cherry on top is that you are some sort of teacher? You are part of the problem. Funny how you had your tail firmly tucked between your legs at first and then you and other doofus MFers here think the deal was "bad" and that justified your opinion to continue to be as toxic as possible?
The reason he got this extension : He finished the 2021-2022 season strong for Houston, averaging 28.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.4 assists in the final seven games, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. In that stretch, he had consecutive 35-point games, the youngest player in Rockets history to do so. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34816489/rockets-kevin-porter-jr-agree-4-yr-825m-extension The reason why the deal was constructed in such way : The Rockets were remarkably pleased after ending the season with a seven-game losing streak, locking up the best lottery odds.
