“Hearing a lot of people say “Why would he sign it?” Hearing from agents “Why would he sign it?” Kevin Porter Jr. was 2 minutes from being out of the NBA based on what happened in Cleveland, based on what happened in Houston last year. There was no guarantee he was going to get another contract. It’s a win-win for both sides. Kevin gets at the minimum $16M guaranteed and Houston can cut bait in years two, three and four. Based on the language, it’s a win-win for both sides.”
If you've been saying that there is risk giving KPJ guaranteed years, this was the confirmation that indeed that risk exists. The Rockets believe it. KPJ acknowledges it. Good deal for the Rockets. They control all the upside.
Then how is this better for the player? The smart thing would have been for KPJr to simply bet on himself if u think he could have gotten a near max offer if he balled out. The reward is far better, and I doubt a deal like this was going anywhere unless he just can’t control himself off the court.
Are you the market? How do you know what the market value was when he didnt even hit the market? Look at Schroder, during his Lakers stint he put up similar nos to KPJ how much did he make in the open market again?
Seems like a good deal for the Rockets with only one fully guaranteed year. If things go south, no biggie. If they go well he's under contract for a good/reasonable number.
How do you know he didnt bet on himself already? What if Rox offered him 10M per guaranteed and this is his way of betting on himself? I think it would be monumentally dumb to take the qualifying offer and completely test free agency, as a 2nd round pick his money goes from 18M guaranteed to 3M guaranteed counting this year. Only poorly advised or insanely greedy players take that kinda risk cuz 15M is still a lot of money and sets you up for a life of luxury. OTH if you get Schrodered or worse, Nerlens Noeled you'll never gonna recover. If you get marked as a minimum player in the NBA barring all star performances you'll never make more than minimal contracts (see Schroder).
“We value the player and the person that Scoot is becoming and are eager to invest in him and his journey,” said General Manager Rafael Stone. “He’s expressed how happy he is to be with this organization and has shown his commitment to putting in the work both on and off the court. We are excited for the opportunity to continue to build something special with him.”
Next season. He is gonna make around 3M guaranteed this year. Actually looking at the spotrac nos that "80M" includes incentives as well cuz his base salary dont reach 20M at all, just 15-19M which is honestly a steal even without the unguaranteed portion. https://www.spotrac.com/nba/houston-rockets/kevin-porter-jr-31589/
There is nobody worth signing in 2023. I would rafher Rox frontload all their contracts on 2023 or get toxic deals for assets rather than sign a max FA in 2023. https://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/
well, isn’t James Harden a better example? depends. It’s easier for a #1 pick like Ayton who’s already banked ~$40 mil to turn down a deal like this, than for a #30 pick…
