this shouldn’t even have to be explained no player is accepting something like this out of “loyalty” or because “he loves Houston so much” if they believe they’ll have legitimate options next summer
Dude he got 13 million extra dollars when he was only guaranteed getting 3 this year. Your hate for this guy has you talking all kinds of crazy. Would you just pass up an extra 13 million after all this guy has gone through, and he has incentives to make even more.
perhaps there was a trade that was on table and would've been shipped out to a contender who probably wouldn't have paid him that much next year due to salary cap issues. With the rockets he gets a chance to start and prove himself to the league. Anyhow, KPJ, congrats again. you are now officially a rocket. if you can prove yourself worthy of those extra years i am rooting for you. if not, we can always trade. win win, i guess.
I was hoping for a slightly smaller number per year (in the 15-20 million range), but can't complain with all the protections in place here. KPJs skill isn't as much the question as his head - so we can get out, if he falls back into inmature behavior. But I have to say, outside of that halftime incident he looked like he took the game seriously - and I hope, that it helps him that we added Jabari (very mature and serious for his age - silent leader type) and lost Wood. If KPJ continues his steady improvement, that contract could actually be a steal and we might have the most dynamic backcourt of the NBA - or we get lucky and can draft a guy like Scoot and move him back to the 3 (or bring him as a scoring sprk of the bech in the Ginobili role, still averaging 30 minutes a game). I have already written in another thread that I wouldn't be surprised to see KPJ getting several votes for the most improved player this year...
KPJ, Green, Smith, Sengun, Tari, Christopher, TyTy, Garuba, and Fernando are all under contract for 3+ years. KMJ will be a RFA if we don't trade him. We have a ton of cap space going forward and have barely touched assets received in the Harden trade. This rebuild is going quite well.
So the "logical" thing to do is keep blurting out opinions as to why amatuer agents feel this was a bad contract for the player? Instead of waiting for the interviews and first person accounts? Just keep using other situations around the league to keep bolstering the idea that the player is not liked around the league and he didnt have any other options and that his agents are terrible too? Its like the Twilight Zone.
Sure, you have to spend.... But my real point was not just about that. Knowing WHEN to spend. Knowing WHO to spend on. Knowing who NOT to spend on. Knowing HOW MUCH to spend. So again, simply spending more doesn't always help.
Morey 1000% would have traded him before the rookie contract ends. Just like he did with Lowry and Dragic.
All of you who got a kick out of coming in here and asking "where is the extension har har" and now want to twist it into a dumb contract for the player and bad agent work in order to preserve your weak ass egos are pathetic! This is the what you all wanted right? Had the chance to have these talks in good faith, but instead relish in the sht talking so - EAT THAT L MFers!
I just love reading the back and forth arguments and misunderstandings or lack of reading comments. Good contract for Rockets. Potential high reward for KPJ..the contract should keep him motivated.
The more I think about it, and read up on the deal, this is a "get cash now" guarantee for this year, and if we are all honest with ourselves, very few of us wouldn't lean into that just as KPJ did. With the perspective of how things have been the past few years, you just never know what could happen in 12 months. He could have a devastating injury. He might have inherited massive amounts of debt from a family business, etc. etc. Now he knows he'll get to where he wants to be for this year financially. Hopefully he'll be smart with it, and take care of making the smart decisions this year. And he won't necessarily have to worry about anything other than basketball, and performing well. The more and more I put myself in his shoes, the better this deal sounds. As his agent, I'd probably be banging my head against the desk trying to convince him to bet on himself with higher upside in RFA.
