I'm cool with whatever gets tossed to me. I'm making positive KPJ signs until it happens. Look at my current one
What a risky deal. Only playing for $15 mil guaranteed of a multi year deal. Especially when you account for things such as injuries these days. But oh well. He actually agreed to it. that says a lot about what kpj would get in the open market. kpj basically signed an NFL contract lol
At this point in our rebuild the 2023/2024 cap space is more valuable for extending our young guys than for making a splash in free agency
this is desperation from KPJ if he’s agreeing to this…it does give him heavy incentive to stay in line and at least he has something in the way of a new contract I guess…the Rockets take on minimal risk, so this is a win for the team Stone in negotiations like Denzel from Training Day
He has a lot of talent, if he performs up to said talent this will be a steal of a contract for us. If we let it play out, and he does beast this season, we will owe him a hell of a lot more than 15 million dollars if we want to keep him. He is betting on himself, and I love that, but lets not pretend his agent and him weren't aware of his likely prospects. This is not a deal NBA players agree too normally.
I'm one of his harshest critics and I technically would have won my bet but he's a Rocket so I'm rooting for him
Sounds like a pretty perfect deal for us. KPJ will have to prove himself because of the 1yr guarantee, he knows he has to ball out because of his somewhat bad rep in the league and not being guaranteed a deal anywhere close to this one if he fails at Houston. But if he does succeed, we have a bargain deal for one of the better talents in the league that really fits the Jalen&Jabari core well.
Man, KPJ really does have a lot of incentive to keep his head on straight. IF the dude successfully plays out this contract, he'll be in a great position to get another massive deal at 26 years old.
How so? If you allow KPJ to go out there this season and drop an efficient statline bordering on 20/7/5 type numbers then he hits the open market and cashes in BIG TIME. This isnt some "we have no options" type of agreement by KPJ. Its a "thank you for believing in me and I'm going to make you guys proud" deal.
A saying Joe Sheehan at Baseball Prospectus coined: "There's no such thing as a bad one-year contract." This is even better...a one-year contract if KPJ goes bad this season, and then a team option for a three-year deal if he plays well and--more importantly--shows a good attitude, reducing the risk of that three-year deal.
Yeah that’s a pretty weird thing for that guy to say. If there were no questions to be answered the deal wouldn’t have been structured this way. Since NBA deals for guys that teams truly believe in are never structured this way. There just wouldn’t be any way he and his agent would have agreed to this if they thought for sure more guaranteed money would be out there for him after the season in RFA. What @Corrosion was saying over and over about the short list of teams with money to spend and them having little reason to spend it likely played a pretty big role in KPJ and his agent agreeing to this prove it type of deal. Seeing the details start to leak out and it seems pretty clear that this will give both sides some peace of mind. They take care of him in a big way for 1 more guaranteed year, but he has to make the team believe to earn the rest.
