There is NO guarantee. Scouts, NFL GMs, Everybody thought Trevor Lawrence was a Generational Talent, a Can't miss prospect, yet Mahommes and Deshaun both went outside the Top 10. Lawrence was rated higher than any of the QBs in this yrs draft and next yrs too and he still hasn't delivered.
Yet Stafford won a Super Bowl last yr. So, it goes to show you that you do not need a Top 10 QB to win big, you hope your draft pick turns into that but nothing is for certain. If you draft a QB that's effective, put weapons around him and have a good defense, you can win!
You're right, there are no guarantees, but given the choice of draft class QBs, I like the 2024 class much more than the 2023 class and the Texans do have choices because they've got the draft picks to get one of the top 3 QBs in 2024. Atleast according to the 49ers trade they have the picks to get into the top 3. It's a matter of which class you like the best.
He played like a top 10 QB in the playoffs. Very clutch against Tampa, very lucky against the 49ers. What would it take to make you want to wait for a QB?
No, the Texans sucked because they never drafted a QB after Carr. They used a bridge QB and tried to make him a franchise QB. Schaub won some games, but was never elite. The 2011 team was good enough to win with a bridge QB, but he got hurt. We won’t mention Watson. And tell me, what assurances do you have you are getting a franchise QB in the draft? There is ONE current franchise QB that has been drafted in the top 5 picks in the draft in the last 12 years (Burrow). Luck retired. Murray is still wait and see. Goff? Ugh. Go look. You will be amazed. Many of the franchise QBs now were drafted between 6-32 in the last 12 years or before 2010. You don’t even know who is coming out in 2024. Why do want to waste time on those shitty QBs? You might as well let Mills play in 2023 if your goal is to draft a QB in 2024. If Mills doesn’t improve, you get a higher pick. Why waste time with a bridge QB? Thats is why you don’t tank. There is no assurance that a high picked QB is your guy. You build your team. The QB is last thing you put in place. You draft a rookie if your evaluation say he is the guy to develop. Do not waste time with bringing in a high priced place holder. Draft and develop your team.
I know which QB class I like better and I'm not willing to settle like the Texans did with Carr and Watson. Time to do something differently. I will ask you this same question, what would it take for you to be willing to wait a year to draft your potential franchise QB? Or do you have a thing for drafting midgets, guys from schools that haven't produced a single productive NFL QB in my lifetime or a dude that's big strong and athletic but couldn't even beat out a guy who sucks at Penn St. ?
The only QB I would wait for is Williams. I admit, I don't know.much about Maye, some like him and Ewers, I still don't see it. That's why I take the best QB available this yr and see what the future brings.
This is where I’m at too and as of right now Williams is going number 1 overall next year. It’s just not realistic for us to be able to get the number 1 pick next year without actively tanking and no team that has the number 1 pick would trade it away with a sure fire qb available. Don’t wanna hear about San Francisco because Trey Lance wasn’t even close to sure fire and that was a shocking trade that most teams wouldn’t do. Also now drafting Watson was settling? That’s craziness. He turned out to be a **** person, but with a better team around him he’s a franchise qb. QB is the hardest position to evaluate and project success in the nfl. That’s why the success rate of ones picked in the top 5 are so low. I believe it’s also low because teams are obsessed with picking physical traits in the top 5. Mahomes didn’t go in the top 5 because he played in an air raid system and no QB has really been successful coming out of that system. Deshaun, threw a ton of interceptions and had some questions about arm strength, even though he was always clutch and performed well under pressure. As much as people are starting to paint Williams as a perfect qb prospect, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t good in the nfl. That’s just how drafting qbs goes. Besides Andrew Luck, it’s a crap shoot.
Watson is not settling. The Texans hit on Watson on the field. He is better than any QB on the field, in the next 2 drafts. None of the QB’s come close to Watson…right now. Will that change? Maybe. There is no QB in the 2024 that is a franchise QB. Not at this moment. If you say Ewers, Im going to laugh at you. The Texans needs to build their team and don’t force a QB pick. Im down for drafting a QB with the lower of the 2-2023 picks, or in the 2nd round. I don’t want to draft a QB in the top 5…just because.
No offense to anybody who views Bryce Young as their #1 guy. He is a great player, but nothing around him causes him to play worse. Alabama scored 49 points! Bryce dished out to 9 different receivers for 455 yards with no INTS! Flip side Jalin Hyatt for Tennessee has found great chemistry with Hooker, but he wasnt some top tier blue chip recruit and did all his damage on 6 catches!! So now Alabama is lacking at CB/S? Is their DL subpar in talent or is the TENN OL just that good? What you are arguing doesnt make sense (no receivers open) and cant be framed as ME being disingenuous cmon my dude. Should we make another excuse for Bryce that his team was undisciplined and committed a program record 17 penalties? Young had an 89 QBR for that game --- Hooker had a 94. Alabama even had a 100 yard rusher that game. Alabama was better on 3rd and 4th downs and won the time of possession battle by 15 minutes!! Alabama defense was ranked WAY higher prior to that game. Hooker diced them up. Bryce Young was right there and played great too. The game was decided by the penalties IMO and that had nothing to do with either QB, but the narrative about peripheral talent is just not sensible.
And to ME, if Ewers is in any conversation about going #1 in next yrs QB Class, it can not be that special. He's not better than any of the top 3 this yr.
Jalin Hyatt is going to be drafted higher than any of Alabama’s receivers. The NFL doesn’t care how many stars you had in high school. Some of the best players in the NFL were 2 and 3 stars. He threw to 9 different receivers because he sees the field well and none of them are stand outs on the field right now. Texas A&M was moving the ball well against Alabama and their offense is garbage. Texas was also moving the ball well. Alabama’s defense isn’t as good as you want us to believe and that’s clear to anyone with eyes. Ewers struggled more against Iowa States defense than Alabama’s. Yes, I would highly rate Tennessee offensive lineman that can handle Will Anderson. This is how you find people to draft. You don’t just go down the high school star chart and start grabbing 5 stars. It’s about how they perform in college against other great players. I’m not taking anything away from Hooker, he’s going to take some knocks because the scheme he’s in is highly divergent to nfl schemes. More so than most college offenses, and because he’s going to be 25 before his rookie year starts. You keep talking about excuses. I think we just look at things differently. I watch a game and I try to spot all of the people who could be drafted from either team, because there’s a possibility the team might draft them. I absolutely rate Gibbs, the rb from Alabama very highly, he was one of the top 5 performers in that game and is a 1st round talent but probably will go in the 2nd. The TE for Alabama has been pretty consistent so he’s probably draftable as well. It pretty much ends there for this year. So yes, it’s a good sign that Young can play great even with less talent than he’s had before. I think that’s a good observation, but I guess that’s just an excuse for you. I don’t care who wins the games since we’re just evaluating the players, but ok.
Jalin Hyatt is a Jr. who prior to this year was JAG. He had a great game, but was on nobody's radar as far as being drafted high. You dont know what these Alabama WRs will do since they are so young - THAT may be the issue, but they could very well end up being better with a little more time. NFL is littered with great Alabama WRs. That just feels like a blanket statement to support your opinion. Throwing to a bunch of receivers is a sign of good field vision I agree, but its also a sign that they were plenty open. Alabamas defense is sinking fast no doubt. They tend to build from that side of the ball and are routinely ranked high on defense so hanging on to that for me wont cut it too much longer. It just feels wierd to diminish anyone who plays against Alabama. Tenn schemed out Will Anderson it happens. Alabama has enjoyed an easier SOS than other guys in these conversations and Young has plenty of weapons around him albeit inexperienced. I feel bad for him because Bill OBrien is an idiot. He would look way better with a smarter "guru" coaching him up - the whole offense would, but they still look pretty dang good! Hooker is a true dual threat guy with a cannon for an arm that keeps defenses on their heels. He may not read the field like Stroud or Young, but he is gifted and has a chance to be a good NFL QB even as an older rookie. If Young isnt going to move around with his legs and wants to stand tall in an NFL pocket he has a high chance of getting hurt. Recruiting from high school most definitely is about star rankings. What they do in college is up to them. Plenty burn out and plenty of 2-3 star guys excel. Im not overly concerned about identifying specific players and their NFL readiness when I watch college football. I look for the standouts for the particular game Im watching and then go back to see if what my eyes are telling me is valid via film. Its absolutely a good sign that Young can play with "bad" talent around him because if he's drafted high it will be to another team that is lacking.
Settling on Watson when O'Brien wanted Mahomes is why this org is where it's at today and no I dont think O'Brien was anything more than an avg HC and an all time worst GM. As far as the next 2 QB classes go, you dont know anything because time will tell that tale.
