So suing to get his money makes him a dick? Or remembering the media members that treated him badly while he was rebuilding the org and treating them like they treated him after he built a record breaking string of 100 win teams makes him a dick. I would say the media acting like a bunch of pansies was the dick move. Hey Footer (Who I used to realy like and respect) Drellich, Passan etc... Suck on it and just admit you were wrong
Pride in what he built? If so he should be very proud. I would agree with you. Who took the fall for the Red Sox scandal? MLB could've just as easily let Beltran take the fall and the Stros continue to do business like the Red Sox did. But Manfred/Media wanted Luhnow gone because 1. He didn't bow down to the press. 2. He was costing MLB money.
Podcast recently quoted somebody connected with MLB front office that the league is "tired/sick" of the Astros. The hate isn't going away because of how deeply the media dug into the story, and now any potential cheating/scandal is so engrained in people's minds whenever the Astros come up. They were a possible viewership draw last year (and the covid year) for hate-watching... but given that they just continue to win/win/win, that's somewhat gone away (plus announcers look silly when its brought up, given the major turnover and length of time since 2017). My takeaway is that there are some teams/markets that this sort of domination is great for the sport... but even without the cheating scandal attached, a Houston team dominating doesn't further grow or popularize the league as much as other teams possibly could (at least MLB may feel that way). Nothing they can do about it... the Astros were built to go on this sort of run, and they've still got a 3-5 year window (at least) to continue to make noise.
I wonder if the big television networks are influencing the MLB as much as they are in college football. Just like how ESPN is trying to steer things to superconferences since it is financially beneficial to them... they may be thinking they can reap the benefits of a LA/NY centric MLB...
Doubtful. Baseball still mostly a regional sport, moreso than any other league. They’re moving towards streaming and individual platforms for showcasing the product vs mass tv package deals. They want to make the game more accessible to the local markets and their surrounding areas.
Luhnow has guys like Hensley that he drafted in the 26th round still trickling in three years after he(Luhnow) left the organization and making a huge impact for the team. Its unbelievable. You can't turn around without tripping over a productive major leaguer that Luhnow got into the organization. It's going to be 2030 and we are still going to have guys showing up somehow that Luhnow initially found throwing 100 mph heat after being developed. Look at his 2017 draft. Bukauskus Perez Matijevic Martin Mushinksi Julks Meyers Chas Rojas Bielak Costes Papierski Ivey Solomon Also signed Wilyer Abreu and Luis Garcia in the international period that year. 14 guys probably going to play in the majors from one draft. That's unheard of.
I still remember the drayton years where they were struggling to sign any of their draft picks. Luhnow could easily fill any teams head of scouting or head of player development role (the positions he had with the cardinals) and run circles around the league based on the algorithms that apparently broke the mold. But he’s just a little overqualified for that right now.
With all of the young pitching, the run will most likely be longer than 3-5 years. Manfred can suck it.
It's so much easier to be a "reporter" when you just regurgitate MLB group-think propaganda. Back in the old days, we called it SELLING OUT.
If this is accurate, then yes. Yes, it does. Or maybe petty and vindictive would be better terms. Luhnow was far and away our greatest GM, and I don't think he was given a fair shake. But I've heard too many times that he was a bit of a dick to work with to dismiss it as untrue. (But I wouldn't say I am convinced yet, either.)
Luhnow is gone, Luhnow is not coming back to the Astros. Might as well talk about Hal Lanier being hired as manager. Carry on, for reasons I suppose.
Maybe it would be easier to not talk about him… if you didn’t have Luhnow draftees hitting series-clinching HR’s and Luhnow international signees throwing 6 amazing relief innings in epic 18 inning series clinching wins. Mancini/Vasquez certainly had their chances yesterday though…
Right, everyone who pays attention acknowledges his role in the teardown and buildup. But he's gone, never to return. So what's the point at this point?
We see life differently, Lunow set high standards for this org and he expected you to live up to those standards, or he would find someboy that could live up to those standards. Atleast that's what I was told by somebody that worked in the FO in 2017. In fast he let me put on his WS ring one night. This is not only what it's like working for and media around genius level people. Genius level people with strong work ethics usually are hard to work around and for. They expect the best out of people and when they dont get the best out of them they either move on from employees or start limiting access, give short interviews, answers to the press. BTW, I know a lot of people dont like genius level people. (I do because they're generally the most interesting people to be around.) But they're absolutely a must have if you want to build what Luhnow built for Crane and the city of Houston. Thank Jeff Luhnow. If rumors are true and Click's moving on after this yr, Crane sees what I see in Click. A guy that's very good at his job, but isn't the risk taker Crane want in a GM. Luhnow was exactly the type of GM Crane wants. Analytic GM's are not all ceated the same. Some are more risk averse (Click) vs not (Luhnow) My mother in law used to work for Crane and she said he's the ultimate risk taker.
I would say people want to acknowledge seeing they're going to another ALCS the job Luhnow did. As far as this conversation goes a guy brought up that he thought Click deserved more credit than Luhnow for keeping Luhnow's team together and several posters commented. He will never return you're correct. But this is paying rightful homage to what Luhnow built for the City of Houston. But hey, you do you and just skip over this thread if it bothers you.
