Original Terminator (though debatably Sci-Fi horror not action), Predator, and Aliens are the Sci-Fi/Action pantheon for me.

I think Ridley Scott is a bit overrated. I've wondered how much of the film was due Dan O'Bannon 's script. John Carpenter & Dan O'Bannon made a student film in Dark Star which was not only similiar in tone. They used an actual beach ball for the alien prop but still created the same suspense.

With all respect due, I think he's underrated.

No argument here. Ridley Scott is my favorite living director (#2 after Kubrick all time IMO)

His best scifi film is Bladerunner but I felt the set and costume designers deserved more credit. There was an interview with Rutger Hauer where he felt quite strongly about Scott's androids. He favored the books interpretation which I do too.

Surprised nobody said Empire Strikes Back. By far the best movie in the most popular sci fi franchise ever.

From a pure action standpoint it’s hard to beat what Cameron pulled off with Aliens and T2. Both movies can just stress you out with the big bad always on your tail aspect. Aliens just gripped me growing up and stressed me more than any other movie growing up. The final act is just a masterclass and solidifies Ripley in the action movie hall of fame.

So yeah… me personally… I’m going with aliens even though Blade Runner (without the voice over) is the superior film.

Exactly how I would rank them, except maybe I would move Predator up a spot or 2.

For whatever reason I've never considered any of the Star Wars stuff to be "action movies". Same with LOTR in the fantasy genre.

As for others mentioned, Alien and The Thing are horror not action. Blade Runner is about as far from "action" as you can get.

    Duh.

I forgot I would have to include Starship Troopers in my top 5 probably over Terminator.

It’s interesting that you like both the book and the movie Starship Troopers. Form people I know who read the book first hate the movie and vice versa. I like hit hit for different reasons.

For those who only know the movie the book is very different and has much more to do with political philosophy and the life of a soldier than action. Verhoeven hated it so redid it almost as a parody mocking the fascist overtones of it.
