You are 100% wholeheartedly correct! Vick and Cunningham did play over 20 yrs ago but GAME PLANS are different now. I still don't think NFL Coaches knew how to use them, they were round pegs in square holes. One of my favorite QBs in college back in the day, Danny Davis at UH, ran a similar system to what Lamar and others are running now, could not get a camp invite in the NFL. Bill O'Brien is still trying to figure out what to do with Deshaun. Lol
You meant " What do I see NOW"? Well, for one history teaches us about our mistakes. I thought that was how we learn. Just as YOUR fearless leader cmoak1982 said, the overwhelming majority of QBs in the NFL are mobile and athletic now. 20yrs ago it was a couple of mobile QBs, the majority were pocket passers.
WTF, I dont have a fearless leader other than Jesus Christ. I will ask you if you've heard of the name Bobby Douglas?
WTF, I dont have a fearless leader other than Jesus Christ I don't know, it could be just me but something about that above sentence just don't go together.
If Cameron Ward drops 3TDs and 300 yards and keeps it close against SC this weekend then I'm trading back with the Cle pick. Select Anderson, Bresee or Murphy with that first pick and drop back for an extra second + to select Ward at the bottom of round 1. Use this draft to build the O-line, defense and special teams. Next year Treyveon Henderson and Xavier Worthy/Marvin Harrison jr in round 1 and go to war.
I applaud your fandom, and I want to pull for the local kid too. He's NOWHERE in the conversation at all in any publication or scouting profile as a top ranked QB for this draft. Maybe he can continue to improve and create more buzz for next year or beyond, but at this point he's a 60QBR guy with a 2:1 TD/INT ratio and that is just not very appealing.
Its romantic to think that true, and there have been times when I've been "right" on prospects. The guys that do this for a living are obsessive/compulsive. They go so far into the process that its not fun for me. Its OK to be an armchair QB and debate favorites. I dont take myself too seriously though and try to have fun and informal. I dont really care to pat myself on the back for any correct guess. I want this dang team to show me something in terms of post season success after 2 decades. Fast approaching the worst franchise in NFL history territory.
I agree with what you're saying, it's just that for the longest we as Texan's fans have been too laid back with the wait and see approach. Whatever the GM say goes, the scouts, etc. And I just think we as a fan base need to start speaking out more with our dollars and let it be known how we feel as a whole, because as you said after 2 decades of zero post season success something has to give. However, maybe we send in our votes and pick the 1st player and it be made public the day of the draft. Then we don't have nobody to blame but ourselves. Lol There is NO perfect solution.
Not placing all of my chips on Ward. In fact, I'd like Levis at the Cleveland pick tbh. But I dont think he makes it there. Ward represents, to me, an improvement over Mills with potential to be an above average starter. Id sit him a year just getting his feet wet before giving him the reigns in 2024 with the likes of Henderson and Harrison at RB an WR and a good O-line and improving defense. https://www.nflmockdraftdatabase.com/players/2023/cameron-ward My honest take on Ward: He is a toolsy prospect. Great arm and makes some Mahomes-esque throws. Needs lots of refinement as he was a wing T option QB in high school and then Incarnate Word isnt exactly the SEC. But he was successful there and has been a surprise so far in a power 5 conference playing nationally ranked opponents. Give him a year behind Mills and, with those tools, you might find that you have "the guy". Seems at least as reasonable a plan as spending our top pick on guys that are not universally considered to be that type of prospect. But then again, Im just a dude typing on a keyboard at lunch time from my real job.
Welcome to the blue collar observers club! Nothing wrong with identifying strengths and weaknesses and noticing similarities with current players. Thats what makes it fun. If I was Ward and he keeps trending up I'd stay in school another year and work on those fundamentals and try to improve on that 5th round designation. Maybe you want him to rush to the league as a fan and thats understandable. If Mills doesnt show marked improvement this season Im not sure the team would wait to try and find his replacement, but maybe they go with a veteran journeyman for a year and take a project flyer like him in the later rounds. 2024 stacks up as a good class too so he would really have to tear it up to finish this season to jump into that conversation.
For those that don't know who Bobby is. He was so good with his fakes, great slight of hand, but damn he was the Csonka of QBs.
