President Joe Biden pardoned all prior federal offenses of simple mar1juana possession, the White House announced Thursday.

The pardons also apply to anyone in the District of Columbia convicted of simple possession of mar1juana, a senior administration official told reporters.

More than 6,500 individuals with prior convictions for simple mar1juana possession will be impacted by the pardons, said the official, and thousands more will be pardoned under D.C. law.

"There are thousands of people who were convicted for mar1juana possession who may be denied employment, housing, or educational opportunities as a result," Biden said in a statement. "My pardon will remove this burden on them."

In addition to the pardons, Biden said he had instructed Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra and Attorney General Merrick Garland to begin reviewing how mar1juana is classified under federal drug laws.

"The federal government currently classifies mar1juana as a "schedule one" substance, the same as heroin and LSD – and more serious than fentanyl," said Biden. "It makes no sense."

Pot stocks Tilray Brands and Canopy Growth each jumped on the news, up roughly 10% and 5%, respectively, in afternoon trading.

Good. Next step decriminalize and then legalize.

He gets credit for this. Wonder how many of them Kamala locked up? He'd get a lot of credit from me if he took a long investigation into what a scumbag she is.

Good on old Joe Biden, probably the only college grad his age who never smoked mar1juana.
Maybe he is finally realizing that this is not his dad's America or his dad's GOP and he will actually have to do somethings to win the election.

Its a good first step, I will be really happy when I can walk into a dispensary here in Houston and by some week legal like. About 3 years ago I got off Ambien and onto natures remedy, no more crazy nights where I wake up and cooked a dozen eggs in the microwave LOL

Smart move. If Republican governors don’t follow suit it will piss off younger voters.

In this ass backwards state doesn't seem like that will ever happen. I hope they can legalize it federally...I miss smoking blunts.

It’s a good and overdue move. Too many people are locked up for nonviolent mar1juana possession at a time when we are seeing a rise in violent crime.

If federal decriminalization happens it also might allow dispensaries to function more like regular businesses including banking services. That could be a boost to the economy of states with legal mariuana and might speed up legalization in all states.

Does this site really not allow the use of the word mar1juana? Weird.

This is a great step towards decriminalization. I had predicted long ago that the 2023 Texas Leg would be the one to finally make the move. But that was before the extreme right turn they've taken since 2016. Now, I think the Dumbass 3 will actually look to make weed laws stronger in Texas just to spite President Biden.
