We're all entitled to generate opinions so Im not knocking you for feeling a certain way and looking at the game from a different perspective. How many high school QBs are actually working through a full set of passing concepts and progressions? Not many - IF ANY! They all are still being taught and most of them need to look to the sideline for the experienced coaches to give the call (even happens in college alot of times). With Ewers the kid has thrown a sum total of 36 passes in 2 games! How can you really come to a conclusion that he isnt progressing with such a small sample size? If his game doesnt appeal to you thats ok, but its a slippery slope when we make definitive statements so soon. For guys who follow all levels of football Ewers was one of these unicorn type guys with an Andrew Luck archetype. 24/7 Sports gave him a PERFECT composite score and was only the 6th player ever that publication had given a player that score! He's not draft eligible for a few years anyway so there is no need to even mention what round he may be taken in THIS year and why even say he's a mid round pick in upcoming drafts if nobody knows what he will become? I agree with you coaching is paramount in amatuer sports and even into their professional careers. Every level of football becomes exponentially harder. Its the supreme team sport and if a player is cursed with bad coaching it will be a huge obstacle, but most Power 5 conferences have the money to pay good coaching. Sarkisian is a GREAT coach for Ewers if you ask me.
Obviously you're a fan of Ewers and that's fine but UNICORN?? However, as an independent observer, I just didn't see anything special on his HIGHLIGHT TAPES, other than he can throw long and a few times, he threw it too long. Since you brought up Andrew Luck, I went back and watched one of his highschool Highlight tapes and what I saw from him is pretty much what he did in the NFL, which was look for options in the passing game, making plays off script and being able to elude the rush. All thing that I would want in a QB.Unfortunately, he's retired. Back to Ewers, if you look at his Highschool tape and Luck's which QB would you recruit if you were a college coach?
https://247sports.com/player/andrew-luck-23337/ Im a fan of football. I dont subscribe to the need in anyone swaying me either way. I can do my own research as well and can also allow lifelong football minds a space vs eye tests from guys like us. Im not too concerned with HS tape for the reasons I've already mentioned. When Ewers gets more college tape I'll look forward to picking up the conversation. Too many guys have great HS tape and were duds at laters levels it doesnt mean that much to me. edit: for the record I used to watch Andrew Luck in person when he was at Stratford over at Tully Stadium. Awesome player. At the same time I watched Andy Dalton a bunch in Katy and he was also a great QB in HS with each guy having a different level of success in the NFL. Ewers clears.
To be clear, I'm not down on Ewers. The question was presented to me why I don't like Ewers, because he is a top prospect for 2024, a highly rated Highschool player, Unicorn, etc., etc. I admitted the only time I saw Ewers was during the game against Alabama. He was ok but nothing special, as was the whole Longhorns team. I thought they played up and the Tide played down. To be fair to him, I went back to go look at Ewers' Highschool tape, since he didnt have much college tape. I did not see a Unicorn, I did not see anything special other than another player who has a good arm. As a matter of fact, the Scout who deemed him as a Unicorn needs his credentials taken! This is why so many players go to college and fail because these scouts hype them up. I think you brought up Luck, who I deem as being SPECIAL. When you turn on his Highschool tape, he jumps off the page; the arm, scrambling, off script plays, etc. I'm not saying Ewers can not develop, I'm just saying from what I saw, I saw a player who I would not want RIGHT NOW as a QB for the Texans.
No offense but you an independent amatuer observer doesnt hold as much weight in the football ecosphere as guys who get paid to watch every single play of these young guys career. I told you that it was cool to have your own opinion, but its so subjective and clearly against the better portion of professional scouts that its not worth continuing and not worth entertaining hypotheticals about THIS year because its not even a realistic possibility for the Texans. Be cool.
True! But my idea of mobile and yours is different. I'm thinking Michael Vick, Randall Cunningham, Lamar Jackson, DeShaun Watson.....a player that can take it to the house from anywhere on the field. Your's I'm assuming is a player like Warren Moon, Justin Herbert, Pat Mahommes, Andrew Luck. They are mobile but to a lesser degree. They can escape the pocket and they can make plays off script. However, if I AND I stress I had my preference I would want someone who every time he touch the ball he's a threat....That is just me but yes, I would take any of the QBs above.
Your favorite type of QBs have never won a championship Ask yourself why? Steve Young is the only QB that was sorta your style of QB to win a championship and it took a bunch of HOF'ers to help him win one.
At first you say not one of my QBs ever won, then you say Steve Young has...., which is it? Every QB that has won a Super Bowl has had HOFers with them. I really didn't get your point. However, the way the game is being played, it's a different game today than it was in previous yrs. That's why I'm not too enthused about CJ Stroud. I like him, just not enamored.
To me, the people who get paid, many are on the same level as we are. That's why there are so many misses yr in and yr out. Don't discount our evaluations. Our thoughts matter, our opinions matter, OUR DOLLARS MATTER. To me that's largely why the Texans are in the predicament they're in, fans taking the position of leaving it to the Professionals.
Pretty funny stuff in this thread, but I'll agree that based on high school tape, Luck was far beyond Ewers. I'd say Bryce Young looked way better than him in high school as well. I don't like going to high school because it's how you develop that matters, but Davis Mills didn't jump off the screen in high school either even though he was highly rated.
None of the QB's you listed have ever won a SB and only 1 of that style of QB has won a SB. Is that clear enough for you. My point is your style of QB isn't conducive to winning championships. The game hasn't changed even though some are trying to push your narrative.
I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying. The QBs I'm speaking of are different, because the game is different. Nothing stays the same. I'm not discounting what you're saying. The QBs I'm speaking of wouldn't have been playing the QB position 10, 20 yrs ago but due to progression it's a different game now. It's faster. Similarly to the Warriors and Rockets in basketball, those two teams were the only team playing SMALL BALL and many said for yrs that that style would not win big but now everyone is copying it.
First, Vick and Cunningham played longer than 10-20 years ago. Second, running QBs aren’t new. The most important part of being a QB is playing and winning with your arm. Legs are nice but not necessary. Plus, the overwhelming majority of QBs in the league are mobile and athletic.
Please read cmoak 1982 for my reply. These type QB's have never won championships. Going back to Fran Tarkenton.
I know it was off topic but just because a Writer, Scout, etc. says a player is the next coming, don't mean we have to believe it. I can't tell you how many times I've heard Texan's Training Camp reports from John McClain and other Sport reporters saying this player or that player was doing well in camp, etc. He gets into a game and he looks totally different than what they were reporting. Tom Savage was a prime example.
