Javier has the signs of blossoming into a legitimate ace. He needs to pitch a little deeper into games and learn to rely a little less on the fastball when it’s off…. But 5 hits per 9 innings….. 170 average against and a 1.70 era in the second half at 25 years old all are excellent indicators. Also if Verlander leaves they will spend money on a big bat and likely a reliever. If Verlander stays they will move a younger pitcher for a price controlled bat. The Astros will be fine either way.
I could easily see that rotation being the best in the American League next year. I don't fully understand all the voodoo magic and I remain a cynical lifelong Houston sports fan, but there's nothing that I trust more in the Houston sports world than the Astros' pitching program. Year after year they crank out guys and I think it's just time to trust that will continue. Hunter Brown is probably going to break out in a big way next year. I'd still pay JV a ridiculous amount of money because **** it. Crane wants to spend anyway right?
Astros really need to stop spending ridiculous amounts of money on middle relievers. They have the deepest pen in baseball.
it’s an interesting comparison to Clemens age 42 season with the stros . innings , rocket beat JV 211 to 175 . Pretty cool that JV has 1.75 ERA and 175 innings pitched . speaking of ERA , Clemens comes in strong at 1.87 . fip about equal for both guys if I recall ERA+ compares JV with a 220 to Roger with 226 . Very close again .
Regular season is one thing. To win a WS you need elite pitching. Guys who step up when it counts the most. As I've said a few times over the past couple of months, Framber wet the bed a few times last yr in the playoffs (like not even getting through two innings). Garcia as well. So I'm going to sit back and see how both of them do when it matters the most. Yes a rotation of Framber, LMJ, Brown, Javier, and Garcia no doubt can excel in the regular season. Playoffs? We know LMJ has stepped up, the other four let's sit back and see.
Either or? It would probably depend on the market. Im not sure why the Astros believed in Montero as strongly as they did when no one wanted him and failed to extend him. I know they think highly of Montero so he is someone they would likely try to resign but there are other impact arms as well.
That is a Click thing. I suspect they won’t spend much at all on the pen if they resign Verlander. Abreu will likely replace Montero in the packing order.
Framber and Garcia both had stinkers last playoffs. But both also had GREAT starts that got them to the World Series.
The game you are thinking of, Game 1 of the ALCS, he actually did make it through two, but was pulled in the third (or maybe fourth, but no later). Then, you had Garcia, Urquidy, and Greinke all removed before completing two innings, which was a first in LCS history. Given how quick the starters were pulled in the first four games (practically unheard of), and therefore the workload placed on the bullpen, it is incredible what the Astros were able to do. Say what you want about Dusty (I'm more pro-Dusty, but even I have criticized his decisions at time), but he deserves a lot of credit.
This is exactly what I want to see. Personally, I am not a fan of the idea of spending more on the bullpen this offseason. Why not? We already have Pressly, Neris, Stanek, and Abreu (who has really taken the next step) under team control next year. Maton as well (if he consistently put it all together, he belongs in that category). Assuming a 6 man rotation (which means 7 man bullpen), that is already 5/7 spots filled. I'd say Martinez has earned one of those two remaining spots, and if I had to guess, Mushinski or Taylor would get the last one (so we have a lefty). Shawn Dubin may also factor into the plans as well.

@Marshall Bryant is a ALT I'm convinced, he has continually tried to get a rise in here by race baiting. It is usually ignored but now he is doubling down.
