Anyone been camping in the Big Thicket?

I have done a lot of camping, but most of it has been in desert areas and mountainous areas.

I'm kind of excited to try something different. I've been to the big thicket hiking when I was a kid.

I'm wondering if we would need a canoe or if that's better.

Reviews of any camping trips you've been on or advice. Thanks.

I may or not eventually go. I am not sure what time of the year is best. I know that some places are closed for camping during the fall and winter because of hunting seasons. But weather might be better.

Yeah man. Big Thicket, Hollywood, Bikini, Brazilian, French, High-Leg Bikini, Bermuda Triangle, Landing Strip, Martini Glass, Silver Fox, Postage Stamp, Punk Rocker, Arrow, Baby Braid...I've spent a ton of time in all of them.

Not the area you're looking at but check out the Caddo Lake area: it's fantastic and my favorite spot "behind the pine curtain"...I've camped around in the Angelina National Forest but it's been so long I wouldn't be much help.

Never camped overnight, but the sheer number of mosquitoes out in those woods can get kind of crazy - maybe not something you need to think about camping in the desert.

Bring bug spray or something equivalent. I'm sure basic stuff, you are already thinking of, but just in case.

Definitely a much nicer place to visit in the fall/spring/winter than the height of summer.

Very cool. Thanks. That's a good price for the cabins. Depending on who ends up going, we try the most primitive, but some of the guys have gotten soft as they've gotten older.

    Yep, that thing's ridiculous.

I can definitely second the cabins at Caddo. Park's really nice, they've got canoes and kayaks and trail/paddle trail maps (which are important, I've damn near gotten myself lost in the backwater nooks and crannies of that lake).

That sounds really awesome. I love getting lost and that kind of hiking or even off trail when permissible and not damaging.
