To extend KPJ or not?

It’s all really more about timing. Because he has a cap hold of $9.7m the Rockets likely aren’t offering more than that in order to preserve full cap space next year. Because he is a RFA next year, they know they won’t lose him unless they deem the figure offered by another team too high, so they have more leverage in sticking to their cap hold figure for now. A $15m extension this summer could mean losing out on a coveted free agent next summer.

Nobody freak out over the names I’m using, it’s just an example.

Let’s say the Rockets extend KPJ for $15m this summer. That’s $5m over his cap hold, which means they have $5m less in cap space available. Their top FA targets are Jakob Poeltl and Andrew Wiggins. They agree to terms with Poeltl. Wiggins is offered the remaining cap space, but it’s $5m short of the max he can receive. He gets a full max offer elsewhere and he takes it.

By sticking to the cap hold figure, they can ensure that they get their top FA picks and can then decide if the price is right for KPJ. Once they sign the other two, they can go over the cap and sign KPJ to a$15-20m contract if he is deserving.

While I personally don’t think he has earned a contract over that cap hold yet, I do believe it’s possible he could by next summer. Paying the extra money will be worth it for the Rockets if it ensures they get all 3 of their priorities instead of just 2.

Right now, it’s not about the price, but the opportunity.

Lmao, Harden doesn't like dribbling around the court like that. He usually stands in one place and dribbles before getting stripped.

There will be contracts that fill that cap space. The Rockets aren't going to keep every young player and will likely have plenty of young players on positive value contracts.

I think I saw someone mentioned 30M when (not if) he broke out or something like that. But my memory could be wrong.

It was we need to lock him in now to a “bargain” of 15-20 million or we will be forced to pay him 25-30 next offseason.

Edit. Just for the record. 15-20 isn’t a bargain and the likelihood of him getting a 25-30 million per year offer is pretty low, not impossible, but low.

Not hyperbole at all, there is a contingent who has said as much as $25m.

The majority seems to be in the $12-15m range

I've been at "anything under his cap hold" ($9.65m) from day one for an extension because it doesn't at all affect next years cap space which is pretty critical going forward considering the draft aspect.
If it doesn't happen before the season starts then we wait for RFA and match if the deal is right.

EDIT: your subsequent post sums up my position from day one.

Great explanation of the situation by @theDude

I wonder what people would think if I said "I don't hate Jalen Green, I just think the Rockets should only offer him 9 mill a year when it's time to give him a new deal"?

Any thoughts about what might get said?

They'd say you're an idiot as always. We'll see when Jalen has played 3 years and if he beats up any women or quits at halftime.

I know those are traits that you admire but most of us don't

Your hate for Green is laughable. I would ask if he slept with your girl but you don't have one

Green has shown more maturity, improvement, and better scoring in a rookie season than KPJ has shown at any point in his 3 year career.

If jalen puts up less then 1 win share his 3rd season, or a sub 54 TS, i will reply with “i agree”

Offering Green 9 million a year would be very consistent with what you post here. Same level of idiocy.

You love responding to what I say lol. Your opinion doesn’t mean anything to me. I obviously know where you stand and we’ll revisit this in a few months
