So... to be clear... you think it was a good thing that the MA officials worked together to move the asylum seekers to a place in MA where they can get better care?
Yes, I do. I think it's hypocritical for a sanctuary destination to relocate immigrants after only a few days, but I think it's a good thing that the immigrants are getting the help they need. Maybe my expectations were too high. I feel like anywhere that considers itself to be a "sanctuary" destination should actually provide sanctuary. I guess it's like the inflation reduction act.
I still don't understand why it's a bad look. They worked together to provide a better location and situation for the asylum seekers. They looked out for them. Sounds like they have nothing to apologize for.
Again, maybe my expectations were too high. I feel like anywhere that considers itself to be a "sanctuary" destination should actually provide sanctuary. Look at it this way. If someone asked you "for how long should a sanctuary destination accommodate the 50 immigrants it receives?", what would your answer be?
And they did. They took care of them then worked together to find a better longer term solution. Regardless... here is the definition of a sanctuary city. So, how did MV fail that definition? a city whose municipal laws tend to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation or prosecution, despite federal immigration law.
Huh? They were dropped off in Mass correct? The Supreme Court in Mass ruled that someone cannot be detained just based on their immigration status. The "Sanctuary State" only extends to that extent, nothing more. DeSantis dropped them off in Martha's Vineyard, an area that does not have the resources for immigrants. Why did DeSantis drop them off in Martha's Vineyard? Was it to make a political point or because he felt it was in the best interest of the immigrants? I cannot find anywhere that Martha's Vineyard is even a Sanctuary city, and that is consistent with DeSantis saying "Sanctuary state". So these immigrants, that were possibly illegally bused to Mass and dropped off in Martha's Vineyard have been taken care of by Mass so far, and were moved to another city in Mass with better resources. Yet you some how think they have been hypocritical? I don't see that at all honestly. All of this is for naught anyway, because the definition of a Sanctuary City doesn't guarantee support beyond legal protections on not being turned over to ICE based on their legal status only. Further, these people are not even illegal at this point under the law. So really DeSantis decided to scoop up some Hispanics seeking asylum and send them on a multi day trip to a far off place to make headlines? Mass and Illinois and DC haven't prevented Florida or Texas from setting their own immigration policy, they haven't stated that Texas has to become a Sanctuary state. They have done nothing of the sort.
Mass is only a sanctuary to the extent that the Mass Supreme Court ruled that the police could not ask for immigration status without probably cause. That is it. Further, the people he sent aren't even illegal aliens. It was all a political stunt, and I find it too bad that DeSantis sunk to that level.
I quoted from YOUR link. What in that link do you believe highlights plentiful services for the needs of immigrants new to our country?
I think people don’t know what the Vineyard is… It’s in no way, shape or form a city of any kind, simply a small island, strictly a summer retreat. The only reason to send immigrants there is to poke liberals in the eye. How dumb and petty. The idiot used florida taxpayer money to send immigrants on a trip that most Floridians cannot even afford, what a dufus.
Given that it's a winter destination, there must be available food, lodging, and forms of transportation.
You haven't visited there in the winter. They are hoping to make it a winter destination. One of the selling points is that you have the island almost to yourself. Simply presuming they must have all of those services for immigrants isn't wise. Tourists who go there will be able to get hotel rooms easily, they can buy food but not necessarily economically. There will be very limited legal services with almost zero attorneys that specialize in immigration matters. They will not have access to courts, few government offices, etc. For the tourist, they will have access to whatever they want because they can have a car. Visiting an Alpaca farm might be fun for tourists, but not really helpful to immigrants struggling to keep up with the requirements of seeking asylum in the United States.
Again...DeSantis used Florida budget money to send asylum seekers out of TEXAS to MA. Again, unless I've missed your answer, was that a proper use of Florida budget money Florida legislated for removing illegal immigrants out of state?
Again, I was simply correcting your incorrect claim that Martha's Vineyard "basically closes up" for the winter.
For at least the 3rd time... Maybe my expectations were too high. I feel like anywhere that considers itself to be a "sanctuary" destination should actually provide sanctuary.
And they did. Based on what sanctuary cities are defined as and what their purpose is, your expectations are wrong. Now... just as your are asking about MV being a winter destination, I'm sure you will acknowledge that your expectation of a sanctuary city is not what a sanctuary city is defined as being. After all... you don't want to be a hypocrite.
