I only saw about 2.5 quarters but Mills looked pretty bad. I have no prediction on his future success but it’s thus far not impressive. He has work to do.
These are my thoughts exactly. Looking back, the Texans were out of most of those games from the start and Mills was playing without pressure.
“Mills has been especially bad in the fourth quarter. He was 0-of-4 in the fourth quarter against the Colts. And against the Broncos, he was 5-of-12 for 75 yards and was sacked and fumbled twice. Combined, Mills is 5-of-16 for 75 yards in the fourth quarter through two weeks.” “Before you can win games, you need to stop losing,” Texans coach Lovie Smith said.” Spoiler
Pep Hamiltons offense doesnt seem all that innovative to me so far. His play calling and timing is also lackluster. Mills looked bad, but I wont lay that completely at his feet even though 19-38 is terrible. All I will say is that true franchise QBs will win games like yesterday. Russ was able to squeak out just enough and he didnt really play all that better than Mills IMO. Davis is going to have to do more than just the "yes coach" manager stuff. He is going to have to create and make some plays off script to extend drives and take shots down field putting trust in his wideouts and keeping the defense from pinning ears back and coming after him. Those TE seams from last week were taken away and nothing else was schemed for Mills to take advantage of. Basic route trees that were occupied resulting in a ton of check downs. At least Pierce was more involved - pass the ball to him more looks like he can be a 3 down back. Mills vs Fields should be interesting. I hope.
Honestly, I don't think making plays off script is in Mill's repertoire. Like Brady, his advantage is in his timing and accuracy and what I see from Mills is he's taking too much time in the pocket and he's not accurate.
Brady makes a ton of plays off script though. He doesnt need to extend plays with his legs. He can step up and have the chemistry with his wideouts to go to a plan B super quick when things go sideways. Mills needs to embrace high leverage situations and play up to them similarly.
As much as the Broncos tried to give this game to the Texans, the Texans would not bite. Seriously, the coach for the Broncos made some god awful decisions, I would say this guy is on the hot seat if he continues to make these mental mistakes. At times the Texans looked like they could roll, Pearce looked good and then other times they looked awful, Mills struggled in the 4th quarter and looked so-so under pressure. Its only 2 games in so it can only get better, I have the bar set pretty low for the Texans for this year, they do look like a different team this year and its going to take some time and talent to turn this around
Guys I must admit, I'm not a Mills fan what so ever but I just listened to a caller on 790am and he made a point that Mills is still new and he's still learning. So, I want to be fair! Are we truly giving him enough time? Let's remember, he only had 11 starts in college, Pep is his 2nd OC since he joined the Texans, Burkhead got 20 touches last week and shouldn't be near a football and finally QB is just like playing PG, it takes time. I think DW4 had us spoiled with his ability to playmake. Mills is not or nowhere near DW4. I think Mills need until the half way point for us to make an assessment.
If the Texans go 0-6 you might as well give Kyle Allen a shot. Just to see if he’s a better bridge than Mills
He had a full offseason to work through what he went through last season, especially getting on the same page with his receivers. Seeing yesterday's game, it's the same output like we saw last season from him. He is a professional NFL QB now. If the WRs are running the routes according to the plays, his passes have to be on point. The inaccuracy is on him.
I agree, I would like to give Driskell a shot as well but I just want to be fair to all the Mills truthers, who are saying Pep is the problem or the O-line or the Running game.
Nah you sink or swim with Mills this year. Hoping to avoid the excuses as to "why" he may have struggled and being painfully honest with yourself as to what type of player he really is. Are blowout stats from last season inflating his worth? I've seen him have good games/moments so its a little frustrating to watch now and have to mention some regression. Either way you cant pull him IMO. Just let him be who he is and then make a year end assessment.
Game is moving too fast for Mills. He’s had 13 starts. Sample size is growing every game yet he isn’t improving.
