What player do you think had expectations but didn't come close to meeting them? This isn't who do you think the worst player is, it is who didn't live up to what we expected. Try to avoid players who where great for us but got injured a lot like Yao Ming.
T-Mac just a year before we traded for him, he was top 3 in MVP voting averaging an efficient 32 ppg at age 23…dude looked like the next face of the league…Kobe vs T-Mac was a legit debate…T-Mac was my favorite player when we traded for him, I could not believe it…my favorite player to watch and 1 of the best/most talented players in the game was a Houston Rocket I loved Steve Francis and Cat, but I got over them quick because it was Tracy McGrady we were getting then he came here and got worse every single year…he got fatter every single year…his shooting got worse every year to the point he could barely shoot 70% from the free throw line…he did not put in the work
Probably the Russian Proton-M rocket. It had a checkered history and flew off course during one launch, thankfully landing in the Pacific instead of a populated area.
Every player that has had outlier ability in one category but had big deficiencies in other areas. There's been plenty of guys with extreme athleticism but nothing else, excellent 3pt shooting but nothing else, great rebounder/playmaker/etc but nothing else. A big red flag is when people are saying player X is top 10 or whatever in the league at this thing but their still a minor role player for years. Then, you get into the playoffs and they're either unplayable or get completely neutralized when people game plan for their one skill.
Star level guy….McGrady Even though I loved him and those teams he never lived up to the guy we thought we were getting. Role player… Troy Daniels I thought Daniels could be a Joe Harris 40%+ on high volume type 3 point sniper with Harden feeding him wide open looks all game. He still managed 39.5% from 3 over his career and hung around the league for quite a while, but overall a pretty limited impact during his NBA run.
With the way social media has taken off, it is hard for the most overhyped player not to be a current or at least very recent player. The player I most overhyped was Wood. Wood went from being bad at defense...to not even trying. The player most overhyped by others is either Sengun or KPJ. This isn't to mean they can't be great players or in KPJ's case may even have been the best player on the team last year (over the full season, last 25 games, Green played the best most often). Only, that their past exploits don't match the hype.
Kevin Porter Jr. Gotta agree with the Ty Lawson one. And shout out to these guys who were never more than the 10th man (at best) but got tons of hype and the coach was “dumb” for not playing them and the GM was “dumb” for waiving/trading them.
