I'll have to push back on this as well. 98 was a no brainer, should have won it all 99 and 01 were really good teams as well, he couldn't get over the hump in the playoffs
I saw Breakin' in a movie theater in 1984 too. LOL. Van Damme break-thru wasn't until 1988 with Blood Sport.
Wagner all day long. The 1/3rd year of Johnson certainly added depth for that year. Not quite as deep, but deeper. My favorite Bull Pen all time was the one with Lidge/Dotel/Wagner. 2003.
The challenge is set before us. Our Worst Starter (not that he's bad) verses their Best Starter. Or best hitter is struggling and may not even play. Can the team overcome the odds and keep the slate clean in September? This is a fight worth watching. Tomorrow after I wake up.
98 and 17 are good comps with Johnson and Verlander arriving at the deadlines to a team on the brink. The only similar Position Player impact was Beltran who followed the Johnson path elsewhere.
So.... back to my original point. If the Astros don't win the WS this season do you give Baker the same pass you give Dierker? And, it doesn't matter what team they were handed. It matters what team they have.
I only give Dierker a pass because he hasn't failed OVER and OVER and OVER again. It's not the single failure, it's repetitious failures.
How many World Series did Dierker make it to with his 4 division winning teams? Shoot, how many playoff series did they win in those 4 seasons? Shoot, what was their playoffs game record with Dierker? It was 2-12. They never were even playing one game to advance. How is that not failure after failure after failure?
Given that the Dodgers, Braves, Mets, and Yankees are all in the same class as the Astros, there's probably an 80% chance the Astros don't win the World Series, even ignoring the other 7 teams that will make the playoffs.
As far as Dierker goes, his own clubhouse had zero respect for any decision making he was involved in... and some say he really wasn't making all that many decisions towards the end of his tenure.
