That speech really was good. They must have spiked his oatmeal or something. Was it divisive? For Republicans, yes. Biden has always held to the idea that the MAGA movement is temporary psychosis. He's trying to divide the right. Based on the allergic response he got from Republistan, it looks like it's working. A year ago when everyone was writing Biden's political obituary I said that 2-3 years is a mighty long time in politics, and that worm could easily turn. Now we here. There's a long way to go still for November 2024, but this is a lesson worth absorbing.
@Phillyrocket I agree with you. But what about this thought: Hasn't the Left's demonization and attempted muting of people who disagree with them on policy contributed to conspiracy theories being strengthened? If you feel ostracized as a "deplorable" because of your policy beliefs, in a two party system, where can you go?
Mostly yes. The key difference here is that "the lefts" demonization and attempts at censorship come largely from the private sector. Meanwhile the American right's demonizing and censorial champion is literally their President and their most visible members of Congress. Make no mistake, folks trying to strip people of their equal voice at the ballot box (pretty much a Republican cornerstone at this point) are absolutely censorial by nature.
If people cannot pay their bills because of inflation caused by government decisions, that matters a lot to them.
I'm 50 and live in Florida now. I have been to Katy before, though (without having to evacuate to it). I don't care very much about local Texas politics. What's your problem with people not born in the US concerning themselves with US politics? Is it xenophobia on your behalf (it clearly shines through - check yourself - racism and xenophobia are not a phenomenon that's exclusive to the right) - or do you only have a problem with it when they do not agree with you, and then you prefer to exclude them from the conversation, like woke Twitter folks do with people whom they don't agree with? I would welcome you contributing your American perspective to a discussion in German about German politics. Let me know when you are ready.
I prefer to exclude anyone who uses the term "woke" sincerely in a discussion. It gives me a red flag that the person gets their opinions from outrage farm content from places like YouTube and twitter rather than doing stuff like actually reading news articles. Remember my other post about America's issue with literacy patience which leads to people receiving their knowledge from click bait headlines, memes and outrage farm YouTube grifters? You are the embodiment of that.
Sure it does matter. The speech was focused on American values. That doesn't mean inflation or other economic issues are not important, but again, none of that is that important if you don't have a democracy.
When people cannot pay their bills, it endangers democracy. It erodes their belief in those they elected.
Let’s not forget it’s not like the Right had no voice in media. Trump might not be on Twitter but he doesn’t seem to have a problem getting his message out. Fox News, Newsmax, OAN all provide outlets catering to Rightwing views. The Federalist, Reason.com and several others provide a venue for Rightwing thought. For that matter the NYT , Washington Post and other supposedly Leftist newspapers still occasionally publish op-Ed’s by right leaning writers. If that wasn’t the case certain posters wouldn’t be able to spam us with the latest screeds from Jonathan Turley or Ann Althouse.
A fast reader doesn't necessarily mean an ability to pick up the nuance and context from the reading. Your simplistic rheotirc implies a few choices. 1. You are purposefully being simplistic to trigger people which I assume is from some subconscious desire to have control of others emotions as your real life doesn't satisfy that itch. Basically your true calling was middle management, and you never got there. 2. You are what I claim, a headline/meme/YouTube content consumer 3. You read but don't pick up context and nuance.
First as someone who travels a lot I’m sure you’re aware that inflation isn’t solely a US problem. Next, yes inflation is a problem and one that the Biden Administration should and is addressing. We can certainly debate how successful they are. How though does denying the last election, trying to overturn it, and defending Trump address inflation? Also how does attacking “wokeness” deal with inflation?
4. I'm right, you are wrong, you don't understand it because a) you are just not really smart, b) you are trying hard but cannot think outside the talking points you have been served.
You said you didn't have time before to start a conversation defining fascism. You seem to have time to make platitudic empty statements about wokeness talking points though that can be seen thousands times on Twitter. Your talking points are directly beamed into your head from Twitter and YouTube.
I don't defend Trump. As to wokeness - it would probably be useful to teach more people (including leftist leadership) basic economics, rather than "gender studies" and crap like that.
Gender studies is a college major people chose. People chose their majors dude. You do know that right? Or do want the freedom to ban gender studies?
No, I'm overtired, on a plane, have had lots of Grand Siècle, and am avoiding deep thinking in favour of mocking lefties while typing on my phone. So much easier. But I promise, I will eventually respond to your question.
You stated one fact and then tied it to an opinion to give the appearance the second part is also fact. Everybody agrees inflation is real. Not everybody agrees it's caused by government decisions, at least not US government. One antidotal evidence of that point is that is inflation is up uniformly around the world. So "caused by government" is an opinion, not fact.
We have gone through recessions, severe recessions, and depressions. American democracy was never at risk through those economic hardship times. What endangers democracy is what we are going through now with an ongoing anti-democracy movement.
