They may be betting no one will keep him on the MLB Roster with the question marks.

They' don't have to keep him on the MLB roster, they don't even have to add him to the 40 man roster.

Is that a MiLB Rule similar to Rule 5 or does he become a FA because of some other rule? I understood he had to be out on the ACTIVE Roster all year or be offered back to the original team for half price if he was a Rule 5 pickup.

If the player is claimed on waivers he must be added to the claiming teams 40 man roster per MLB.

If the player is claimed off said waivers by another club, he is immediately added to that team's 40-man roster, at which point he can be optioned to the Minor Leagues (if he has Minor League options remaining) or assigned to his new team's 26-man roster.

If a player has options remaining, is he even exposed to waivers for simply taking him off the 40 man roster?

Yes. Options mean they can send him down while still on the 40 man. To remove him from the 40 man, he has to go on waivers or by non tender.

They ways to remove a player from the 40 man is to

    - DFA him
    - Trade him
    - Release him
    - put him on the 60 day IL.

So I assume both players were DFAed, but this exposes them to waiver wires immediately, but not under Rule 5 which would require they remain on the active roster or be offered back to the original team for half the claiming price. Then if they are not claimed, than they are assigned to the MiLB club. Must be one of the other Rules.

It used to be so much easier to just look up the rules because they didn't get changed very often.

Found this. Thanks for the assist. Outright waivers is the unnumbered rule.

Not sure why you think this has anything to do with the Rule 5 draft.

Rule 5 is a once a year, off-season draft and has nothing to do with in-season transactions. The only people subject to the "must remain on the active roster or be offered back to the original team" are rule 5 - major league portion draftees, which again has nothing to do with Soloman's situation currently.

I wasn’t sure Bregman would ever be able to do this again.

So September call ups are not eligible for the postseason, unless they are replacing an injury? Brown essentially wouldn't be eligible. Can someone confirm?

Edit: Pretty sure I understood this incorrectly.

You have to be on the 40man roster as of 8/31 close of business

Just because, I'll throw this out:

Baseball America does a poll of all manager/coach types in every league late in every year, here are the pertinent results for the AL West:
    • Best hitter: Yordan
    • Best pitcher: Justin Verlander
    • Best FB: JV
    • Best CB: JV
    • Best control: JV
    • Best manager: Dusty Baker

Here's what they said for the PCL:
    • Best strikezone judgement: David Hensley
    • Best pitching prospect: Hunter Brown
    • Best FB: Hunter Brown
    • Best breaking ball: Hunter Brown
    • Best reliever: Enoli Paredes
    • Best defensive catcher: Korey Lee
    • Best outfield arm: Pedro Leon

They are relying on Manfred using a rubber stamp to add them by petition to replace an IR player. I think that's a mistake. I don't understand what is gained by delaying the roster moves past the 8/31 deadline and leaving playoff eligibility for call ups in Manfred's hands.
