Stuff without control is BB, HBP, WP, etc. If you can't hit the zone or at least make batters THINK it's in the zone, then stuff is wasted. That's why at least some CONTROL IS ESSENTIAL. I liked it when JR Richards was developing control, but still just wild enough to make fear of the 98 mph Fastball and 92 mph slider and the HBP put thoughts of self protection in batter's minds when they faced him.
I think Framber is going to finish top 5 in CY Young voting, I’d argue he should have a chance at winning it based on how many innings he’s pitched.
Sorry if it’s been posted before, but I am really confused and haven’t been able to get a good explanation on the internet. From what you are saying anyone in the Astro organization who makes a major league appearance during any part of the regular season including September is eligible for the playoffs, even if they have not been added to the 40 man or active roster before Sept.1? I’m hoping that is correct, because I sure would like to be able to play Brown or Diaz or any other prospect that puts on a show in September.
I do not want to rely on a waiver from the Devil Manfred to have Brown and Diaz available for playoff rosters. Especially since just making the 40 man moves a day or two early is so simple.
Siri wasn't on 40-man until September 3rd last year. He played in the postseason. Per MLB.com: A player who doesn't meet said criteria for postseason eligibility can still be added to a team's roster in the postseason via petition to the Commissioner's Office if the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing someone who is on the injured list and has served the minimum amount of time required for activation. (For example, a player on the 10-day injured list who has been on it for at least 10 days, or a player who has been on the 60-day injured list for at least 60 days.) Players who are acquired in September or after are ineligible. The Astros have 4 players on the IL that would meet the IL conditions currently with at least 2 that are done for the year.
I'm guessing the Astros add them on 8/31. Though, more so they have more flexibility than fear of Manfred. You're welcome.
Verlander and McClanahan are gonna both miss at least 3 or 4 starts, Cortes is also missing starts now. I think he could easily pass them on workload volume alone. If Framber has 40 more innings pitched, that's significant. As of this moment Cease is in the drivers seat, but one bad start and I think it becomes a dead heat with multiple guys, and Framber would be right in the mix.
I DO fear Manfred. He HATES us and has pulled every trick in the book to hurt us because we beat his beloved Yankees consistently.
If he finishes the year strong, I could see him finishing top 3 or maybe even winning it? His streak is no joke. He’s a long shot to win but he’s definitely placed himself in the running.
He'd need to finish the season with at least 2 outings of 0 runs and continue his streak. If Verlander only misses the one start, it would be very hard for him to lose. Top-5 though seems very reasonable. 5th in ERA plus the streak, I'd think he is battling Ohtani for 4th on most ballots if they happened now.
JV is in the drivers seat even if he misses 3-4 starts. He leads the AL in era, WHIP, and wins. Unless he comes back and just wets the bed his final 3-4 starts he should win the CY.
Agreed ... but... I mean it's rare a minor leaguer comes in gang busters looking like a vet. The dude just got called up and thrown into the mix. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I wouldn't mind giving him extended starts to see what he can do (like 3-4 consecutive) and then toss him back/back to bench if necessary. It's just hard to get into any kind of rhythm or groove, especially these high K high power guys. I mean he kinda reminds me of an Adam Dunn type. Those are streaky players with game changing power potential.
To be fair to JJ, I feel like it’s hard to get a feel or better without consistent playing time. Wish they would’ve given him a couple weeks playing everyday like they did with Meyers. He might not be good, but I can’t say he’s gotten a fair opportunity to show what he has.
