    I was always impressed how completely he stayed out of the limelight once he left office. Granted, he was always more popular in the US, but that's more self-control than I could muster.

    Maybe that's a skill you learn (how to keep your mouth shut) growing up as a young Communist party member.

    Looking back, I get the feeling that he really wasn't free. I mean as free as a mobster who came clean after knowing where all the bodies were buried.

    Freaking Yeltsin. I guess they were all crooks, just in varying degrees and competencies.

    Rip Gorby. He tried to give off a dignity neither side had a vested effort in reciprocating.

    I recall him trying to run for President of Russia some time in the 2000’s. I don’t think he was forced to be quiet but just wasn’t relevant any more.
