They don’t make it to the WS in 2017 if he doesn’t kick ass in the ALCS. Will take any playoff domination.
IT doesn't have to be Whitley, the main point is getting rest for Montero and Neris that I think would be beneficial for both of them in the playoffs. You cannot look at the 40 man roster and not say Whitley has the highest upside (now that Brown is up) so getting his feet wet this year would be good for him. But, again, the idea is more rest to get ready for the playoffs for a couple of dudes that have a fair number of appearances and have looked less effective as of late, probably because of those appearances.
I still want to see Brown on the 40 man move BEFORE Sept 1. It has to be done anyway to bring him up ON Sept.1. Just make sure he's eligible for the playoffs in case we catch lightning in a bottle.
@Joe Joe snd other guys have posted it all over the place. It doesn’t matter if he’s on the 40 or not before 9/1- he will be able to be added to the post season roster through long established precedent over the last 20 years. It’s all good. That said- they might as well do it now as later, but it won’t keep him from pitching in the playoffs if they don’t do it now.
Yeah. He’s already up though. They get one more shot if they did it now. Of all the guys on the 40 Whitley makes the most sense imo to get his feet wet in September.
I've seen "on the roster BY September 1" thrown around so much I thought otherwise. And precedent doesn't mean ANYTHING to MLB anymore. If Meyers has been replaced by Matijevic and Yanier Diaz is the Sept.1 call-up, then that's one 40 man for Janier. Beilak replacing JV and Brown as the Sept. call-up is another 40 man move requirement for Brown. So two men on the 40 man will need to be cleared. Interesting that Diaz was named before Matijevic, but Matijevic is first recalled. Maybe because of the 40 man move required for Diaz.
Yes- it’s thrown around but it’s not how it works. Baseball writers should be ashamed of themselves for perpetuating that over and over and over again. Relax- don’t worry about who is the September call up and who isn’t. If the team wants them on the post season roster there are mechanisms in place to make that happen. And yes- 2 roster moves will have to be made to the 40 before they can play. I suspect they will be done on 8/31 after the actual game with Texas but it doesn’t really matter.
There's been a million good pitchers with mediocre stuff who can put it where they want it. If you aren't getting it near the right spots your stuff is gonna get spit on or crushed, no matter how filthy it is.
I respectfully disagree. I've seen plenty of pitchers with stuff and only those who find their command make it long enough to have an impact for their team.
Just a brief list of 40 man Roster players NOT currently on the Active Roster. Pitchers Blanco Dubin 21 Mushinsk Paredes Solomon 28 Whitley 10 Position Lee 7 Goodrum Jones Perez 9 Meyers IR <60 A. Diaz Verlander Pressly
I bet those guys have much better stuff than you give them credit for. Spencer Strider put it well when he said command without stuff is just batting practice. Moreover, command comes and goes much more than stuff. If you look at the pitching models you will see their command grades have a much greater degree of uncertainty/time to stabilize than stuff.
So apparently Odorizzi's incentives that increased his player option and buyout were based on the combined appearances with 12 outs or more in 21 and 22. So he already maxed them out. This is a big reason the Astros traded him and couldn't get much in return. He will have a 12.5 million dollar player option and a 6.25 million dollar buyout for next year.... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/08/previewing-upcoming-opt-out-decisions-and-player-options.html
Can we please send down JJ Metajevic and call up Lewis Brinson.... Just saying the dudes on fire in AAA. And JJ isn't so hot
