Because he sucks? Dubon should be our last resort option and maybe a late inning defensive replacement (although his defense wasn't exactly superb last night). I don't get the love for him. He's like a slightly more versatile Goodrum. Which is bad.
I heard Astros going back to 5 man rotation. Garcia is on the bump tonight. Does that mean Javier is moving back to bullpen? Might see him piggyback this start with Garcia?
I never said he hasn't sucked. I simply responded to the poster that implied he needed rest. He clearly doesn't need rest. He just hasn't been playing very good.
Starting this past Tuesday, the Astros have 3 off days over the next 17 days. Thilus, the 5 man rotation. I suspect they will play it by ear with Garcia and Javier over those 17 days
I like Jake. I just think he hasn't fully recovered ( physically and mentally) and has no business on a MLB roster until next year. His power is way down. Maybe he is deciding to swing early to make up for that or bat speed? His throws were much weaker than I remember last year. Does anyone know if things like bat speed and throw velocity have improved June to July to August? If so maybe continuing to get him time and reps makes him solid on the playoffs. But my suspicion is that he just won't be starting level until next season if ever ( sad)
Not a direct measure, but Meyers's EVs took a nose dive the 2nd week or so in July around when he showed he was in pain after missing a diving catch. Last 10 games or so, his EVs have risen to about league average, but still lower than what he was hitting last year. He also had his strongest throw this season a week or two ago IIRC. Meyers' exit velocities averaged about 90 mph last season. This season, his rolling average per 10 batted balls hardly breaks that mark.
I’m really hoping Peña turns it around. Especially heading into the playoffs. He’s hitting just .224/.259/.366 since June 1. His chase rate for the season ranks in the top 20 among 145 qualified hitters. Idk what they gotta do to get him to stop chasing the sliders but I hope it happens soon.
Pena has always been a defense first player with a questionable hitvtool and chase/K issues. He has a 25% K rate just like last year in the minors. His hot start masked this and fooled people into thinking he is better than he is. He is a solid starting MLB shortstop especially for a rookie ( and will get better). He just is not a guy who should be expected to be one of the 6-7 best hitters on a contending team. Great glove who won't kill ya with the bat. I would put him in the 8th spot of the order and keep him there at least until spring training.
