With Garcia scheduled to Start tomorrow, and JV expected to get his next start in less than 6 days (thus the 90 pitch limit), Who gets skipped and who moves to the BP?

I will be disappointed if they shove our 3rd best starter (Javier) back to the BP just because he's done it before.

To be honest, Garcia being replaced tomorrow and being sent to the pen makes the most sense. It gives McCullers, Javier and Urquidy on more start on 5 days rest before going to 4 days.

I think they should tandem Garcia and Javier.

Javier is only 1 IP away from his career high and already 12 IP more than last year.

They need him effective, fresh, and healthy for the playoffs.

I think not trading Garcia was a mistake but since he's here he needs to be used, if nothing else to help the bullpen that really needs it now.

Don't get me wrong. I think Garcia is a very talented pitcher and can be valuable the rest of the way and a weapon in the playoffs.

I just think based on the depth of the staff and holes on the roster he would have best been used to bring back roster improvement.

But now he and Javier should each pitch 4-5 innings. If the starter has low/moderate PC and is not into 3rd time through order, he gets the 5th. Otherwise bring the other in for 5th.

Javier will be on 4 days rest so they can still do this although my preference would have been to start Lance on 5 days rest that day then Garcia/Javier the following day vs Balt.

I just don't see the need to continually handicap a TOR pitcher.

Without being able to know who will be available health-wise when the play-offs begin you have to treat them all as if they will be critical to the teams success. They all look tired to me right now as most do by the time that Summer is winding down. If you had to pick your play-off rotation today You would have to start with JV, Framber, and Javier. They are your best 3 by what has to be most any ones standards. They are our Ace, #1a & #1b after them you have to give serious consideration to how many starters you intend to take into the play-offs. I think that most teams do not have the luxury of having more than 4 pitchers who are good enough to start in any game. The Astros do and with the schedule we are looking at I think it would be a mistake not to utilize them at least till they get past the series with no travel day off. With McCullers, Urquidy, and Garcia left I could make a good argument for Urquidy or McCullers to be our 4th both are #2/3 starters on most any team. With Urq's ability to go deeper and the recency of McCullers coming off an injury I would lean toward Urq. Why not take all 5 if you have them and if it becomes cumbersome at some point let attrition decide who goes to the pen. I have a lot of faith in all of them but McCullers has been in the pen for very high stress, play-off relief innings and had good success. I think I would be unwilling to send Javier to the pen. I view him as a potential Ace and even though he has the experience to handle long relief he is an obvious step up in the rotation from Garcia.
There is still a month of the regular season to play and anything can happen to anyone. Concentrating on not letting that happen should be the #1 priority for September.

All 6 of them belong on the playoff roster which is a great thing.

Pitchers are much less likely to pitch 6+ innings in the playoffs so the depth is huge.

Also, if this team gets to the ALCS, there will be games 5 days in a row which will require 5 starters.

I think 1-2 JV followed by Framber is no longer even a discussion.

    My ideal pitching map:

    ALDS 1: JV 1-6, Garcia 7, Javier 8, Pressly 9

    ALDS 2: Framber 1-6, Stanek 7, Montero 8, Pressly 9

    ALDS 3: Lance 1-5, Urquidy 6-9

ALDS 4: Javier 1-5, Garcia 6-9 (full 4 days rest)

    ALDS 5: JV 1-6, Stanek 7, Montero 8, Pressly 9.

9 pitchers used: Abreu, Neris, Martinez still available for those unscripted moments, lol.

    * only 12 pitchers needed this round because 6 stretched out starters and 2 off days in 5 game series.

    * extra position player allows a speed/defense guy like Pedro Leon on the playoff roster, but he will need to be added to 40 man before 9/1/22 for this to be an option.

It's amazing how different stats give different rankings for our rotation.

    ERA+

    1. Verlander 205
    2. McCullers 162
    3. Valdez 145
    4. Javier 133
    5. Urquidy 106
    6. Garcia 94

    WHIP

    1. Verlander 846
    2. Javier 997
    3. Valdez 1128
    4. Urquidy 1134
    5. Garcia 1176
    6. McCullers 1455

    WAR

    1. Verlander 4.6
    2. Valdez 3.4
    3. Javier 2.4
    4. Urquidy 1.5
    5. Garcia 0.3
    6. McCullers .03

    ERA+/WHIP

    1. Verlander 242.3
    2. Javier 133.4
    3. Valdez 128.5
    4. McCullers 111.3
    5. Urquidy 93.5
    6. Garcia 79.9

    Verlander is the ONLY constant.

The ALCS will only have the 5 games in a row scenario (G3-G7) if it stretches all the way to 7 games. If the astros take care of business in games 1/2 at home and take a game on the road, they won't need to see the series stretch that way hopefully

It actually pretty much lines up our rotation exactly the way you would expect when you remove LMJ's statistically inconsequential small sample. Javier and Framber are flipped a little but otherwise it's the exact same ranking in all 4.

Move Garcia to the pen and give Montero a break. He looks worn out.

Correa misses being an Astro so much. You can just tell how he is around the guys.

I would absolutely take him back at much less than what he wants.

Correa looking at his Astro buddies, and after he misses the playoffs...he'll have to rethink his priorities lol

Of course his current priority is getting paid, so I dunno about him coming back for cheap. Not even sure if Astros would offer him the same contract that was initally rumored, if they want to keep Verlander.

Team CJCorrea ****ed themselves bad but I would be happy to have him back if he takes a reduced contract. His market value isn't anywhere near what it was or what he thinks it is. I'm curious what kind of deal he will actually end up getting after this season. His fWAR is on pace for 3.5 over 150 games and his WRC+ is sitting at #5 for shortstops and #50 in the league overall.....so maybe 20-25 mil per season?

He is worth about that IMO also. But I always wonder how tying up that money for CC will hinder us from spending it elsewhere. For instance, if it was either or, I would rather extend Tucker than pay CC.

It doesn't seem like much variation to me. McCullers has had two starts so his numbers are all noise. If you take him out, JV is #1 and Javier and Valdez are 2/3 in all categories. Urquidy is clearly #4 in every stat and Garcia is clearly last in all of them.

edit: I see seal already covered this.

He'll get $30MM+ / yr. His only screw up was not trying to be the first SS off the market, but he set himself up the perfect contract to try again. I doubt he has any regrets not taking the Astro's super-shitty offer.

Correa got paid, but he may become Mr. Miserable like Kevin Durant. When you have "enough" money other things are so much more important.
