I just read the ESPN article on this. The Nets odds have improved, but how in the hell are the Lakers this high? According to Caesars Sportsbook, the Nets' odds to win the NBA championship this season moved from 18-1 to 11-1 after the Nets announced Durant will stay. The 9-1 odds tie Brooklyn with the Los Angeles Lakers for fourth-best odds to win the title behind the Celtics (+450), Warriors (+650), Suns (+800), Clippers (+800) and Bucks (+800).
I tend to look at this situation with positivity no matter what. Buttttt I think this actually may be the best outcome. I still think things fall apart. Now juror leave for nothing. Durant is worth even less next offseason after he is another year older and probably misses more games. popcorn ready for this
odds mean nothing regarding predictions... odds are designed to merely get an even distribution of bets - so the casino wins regardless of outcome... a lot of stupid Lakers fans are gonna bet on the Lakers - therefor, the casino doesnt have to provide better odds to entice people to bet on the Lakers... i live in Vegas - and LOVE betting against the Lakers... Being so close to LA, vegas gets a lot of money bet on the Lakers - so odds are skewed...
This was the only way for Brooklyn not to implode (i.e., pray everyone gets along). They still might, but there was very little chance they were getting someone as good in a trade and Rockets holding all their picks really hurt their chances of a quick rebuild.
imo... we missed the boat regarding moving those Nets picks in conjunction with a KD trade... If the Nets had the ability to regain their picks - they surely woulda dealt KD and gone into rebuild mode... Without their picks at their disposal - there's no sense in tanking... so they may as well field the best team they can and try to get the gate money... Point being, if they got their pix back... they'd tank and be lottery pix - and we could 'charge' them for lottery pix... Not having their pix they will prob be an above .500 team and the pix will be mediocre... barring a KD injury or something... ehhh... maybe a crappy season this year will entice them to offer more next off season...
This only helps the Nets chances at a complete explosion this season. KD stays and twists an ankle and he will sit for a month. If he’s not in it then team chemistry flushes down the toilet

Every couple weeks, the narrative changes. While the Nets would like their most recent decision not to trade KD to be a conclusive one, it all depends on how KD reacts. KD is now in a position where he either: 1) Caves in on his demand trades. Is quiet for a while. And shows up ready to go at camp with his tail between his legs. 2) Decides his pride wont let him bow to the Nets and orchestrates some new maneuver to force a trade. 2) seems more likely to me than 1), but there are a lot of moving parts. The Kyrie factor. Will Simmons play? Who is the Coach and/or GM? I have no real strong feeling about it except that the status quo isn't likely to last.
Disagree. The 2023 draft is supposed to be "historic". The 23 pick is a swap with Houston. The Nets could have easily tanked this year and ended up with a high lotto pick, with Houston ALSO ending up with a high lotto pick - HOU would get the better one, but the Nets would get a good one still anyway. More at issue for them is next year's pick. Not much has changed, imo, regarding next years situation. Kyrie is a FA and seemingly does NOT want to stay. KD - who knows, but another year older, etc. I think the Nets would have to make the ECF and be competitive at a minimum for both those guys to want to return next offseason. The East is not cakewalk. Boston, Miami, Milwaukee, Philadelphia all tough - Atlanta improved, Toronto, Cleveland ?s but not bad by any stretch obviously. Add in that none of the 3 ever play anything close to a full season and the only meaningful change from the Rockets perspective, imo, is that the small chance the Nets might have sucked then leapfrogged folksinto a top 4 pick in the lottery, which HOU might have then swapped for, is gone now. Which just means next offseason they will be in the same spot as this offseason, most likely.
My hope is that they keep KD for one more season and then we swoop in next summer to cash out our assets for a guy like Brown.
Exactly. They decided to drink the poison hoping that better trades emerge during or after the season. This is certainly not over and I am 100% sure this is what was communicated. The Nets are NOT going to be as good as last year. Durant will likely dog it at some point as well as Simmons and Kyrie. This appears to be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic to put off the coming implosion. Kyrie will be in the same place next offseason. They may start the season this way but I don't think they are going to like watching the result.
sure, there can be a scenario where both picks are decent... but i think to go into full tank and rebuild mode, you want your picks beyond 1 year... and really, i think any team that spends its payroll and really tries can flirt with .500... honestly, if we wanted to dish a couple future assets and maybe some young talent we could get win now vets and be .500 or better... but just taking it from the Nets perspective... if u have all your picks going forward... you can tank and accrue assets - and pretty much be guaranteed a few notable draft picks and jettison existing players for future draft capital... If you dont have your picks - you may as well try to make it work with KD - or trade him for win now options - rather than future assets... bottom line is... with the Nets not owning their picks - I would project those picks to be no better than mid round at best... If the Nets owned those picks - they could guarantee them to be lottery picks with the potential to be very high... Therefor, imo those picks are worth more to the Nets than they would be worth to us or anybody else... That is the point of differential I think we should exploit... maybe next off season...

Kinda funny to see so many people now thinking this means the Nets are going to be contenders for the next few years. They still have Kyrie, who can spontaneously combust at any point. It's hard to imagine KD won't restate his trade demands if they get off to anything less than a great start.
For new he is being compared to Kobe changing his mind and staying - a good company to be in as far as PR and pride is concerned. If Simmons regains confidence (I'm sure, Nash won't put him under the bus a la Rivers - he is Canadian after all) and they convince Kyrie that Simmon's defense is important to winning, then they have a chance to click a whole year long potentially. Kyrie likes money and likes winning - he'll play (this year). So it hinges on whether Simmons has matured a lot and if his back is ok
