Interested where those numbers came from and why they differ so vastly from the nba.com second spectrum tracking numbers. It says only 7.6% of his 3PT attempts were considered open, but according to second spectrum here is the breakdown they give for # of attempts per game by different defender location for KPJ. Very tight coverage : <0.1attempts per game Tight coverage : 1.0 attempts per game Open : 4.0 attempts per game Wide open : 1.7 attempts per game ~5.7/6.8 or ~84% of his 3 PT attempts were tracked as open or wide open. https://www.nba.com/stats/players/s...0612745&CloseDefDistRange=6+ Feet - Wide Open
According to nba.com, Porter was taking 4 3pt attempts with closest defender 4-6 ft, and 1.7 3pt attempts with the closest defender 6+ ft away. Am I missing something? Where is this 7.6% figure coming from? https://www.nba.com/stats/players/s...=1610612745&CloseDefDistRange=4-6 Feet - Open
I posted the same numbers. It also shows that, his non c&s are fairly open. It is more interesting that he did much better on c&s's. So the reason is not that they are more open. Though he was being defended by the best defenders, he was still getting his open shots and missing them.
Not every "open" shoot is created equal. With space killers like Tate or Sengun, they may be open due to defensive indifference because everyone knows they can't shoot, with KPJ a lot of those "open" looks are when he is being blanketed by the other team's best defender and he does a step back to create space.... that's a MUCH more difficult shot, but it would be counted the same by some metrics. Also, his overall 3 point percentage was the second highest in the team among players still on the roster... so it's not like he was missing that often no matter what.
deep into this thread i finally figured out the true dream connection now. back in the day akeem would eat these guys for lunch -- while today his modern-day replica just beats these guys with lunch!
according to nba.com kpj had 84% of his 3 pts 4 ft or more away from closest defender. Even if all of his step backs create 4 ft space, which I highly doubt, he still has roughly 34% of his shots that are not step backs or catch and shoots that are open or wide open. he is shooting about 30% in step backs. I couldn’t find an exact number for this. The shot maybe tougher but this is nowhere near good.
Because it's very much like the same situation: Two players that haven't really played PG being throw together to play PG. Lin dabbled with it when Melo got hurt.....then got booted when Melo came back. Harden a 6th man dabbled with PG from that role. The next season Lin and Harden were throw together but it was much like a cluster **** a majority of the season. If you watched the games you know that. At least Lin and Harden did PG version in years prior......Porter did it for 16 games when Wall was gone in 20/21. So it was basically his first real time at PG this past season. Green was a rookie that we asked to run some PG earlier this season. Two raw players running Point at basically the same time. It's hard for two vets to do that, forget about two raw individuals to do it well. It's like dancing with two left shoes. So you admit Porter had the oppositions top defender as posted in the tweet. Porter was 5th on the list for Guards. Behind: 1) Luka Doncic 2) Dame 3) Beal 4) Ja Morant 5) Porter 6) Anthony Edwards 7) Trae 8) Cade 9) Kyrie 10) Devin Booker Porter was supposedly the main man like Luka......Brunson (side kick)? Dame..... Anfernee Simons (side kick)? Porter jr...(Who)? Here are the stats: (21/22) Anfernee Simons: 17.3 pts...2.6 rebs...3.9 Ast...24.8 (Ast%)....22.2 (USG%) Brunson:................16.3 pts...3.9 rebs...4.8 ast...24.3 (Ast%)....21.9 (USG%) Porter jr..................15.6 pts...4.4 rebs...6.2 Ast...30.7 (Ast%)...24.1 (USG%) We've already established Porter had the toughest draw defensively.... Brunson $27.7M....$26.3M (23/24)....24.9M (24/25)....$24.9M (25/26 P.O.) Anf Simons $22.3M...$24.1M (23/24)....$25.9M (24/25)......$27.7M (25/26) Rockets need to pay the man (Porter) and quit clowning him with $8M or $10M joke offers.
A lot of words to cover up that you forgot that Jeremy Lin was on the team in 2013. It's ok. It was a long time ago. Also, Harden > Porter Jr. This isn't hard mate.
simons and brunson had much better efficiency though, you can't just put box score stats. KPJ true shooting is much closer to westbrook then to either of those guys
A one season sample size isn’t very noteworthy with combo guards which is why the Rockets are smart to be patient on the contract.
I remembered Lin ( I mentioned him n post #1189)....he sucked. So what. Harden forced the Rockets to get rid of him. They both played tug-a-war with the ball just like Porter and Green did for the better first half of this past season. I know Harden was better in a time when players could dribble the air out of the ball.....that time has passed. What you fail to see is that Harden needed players around him to get better in order to be the force he is today. Spacing. We will agree that we disagree. You will see when Porter has a breakout season and some team will move money in order to pay Porter $20+M.
Not even close to the same thing, Lin was the American leveraging Chinese ancestry and a few weeks of good play to build hype and an absolutely insane player only fanbase, Green is an American leveraging Filipino ancestry and a few weeks of good play to build hype and an absolutely insane player only fanbase, completely different.
Lin (12/13): 20.8 USG% Harden (12/23): 29.0 USG% Lin (13/14): 20.4 USG% Harden: (13/14): 27.8 USG% So if you think Harden wasn't the PG you are mistaken. Just like when we brought in Ty Lawson in 15/16: 22.3 Ast% and 14.8 USG%. Anyone who watched the games could tell you the PG Ty Lawson was used as a spot shooter predominantly. -------------------------- The days of MJ, Kobe and yes Harden hogging the ball are over. Nowadays it's about sharing the ball more than ever. Even Harden has taken more of a back seat: Harden (21/22): Nets 28.3 USG%.........76ers 24.9 USG% Yes Jalen Green can slide over to the 1 and be good; but the best defenders will also slide over to the 1 and guard him. Guys like Tybulle, Mikal Bridges, and others. Nowadays you kick it cross court to the other combo guard who has the mismatch. I dnt expect you to understand......but I will remind you at seasons end. Jalen Green (rookie contract) J Christopher (rookie contract) Sengun (rookie contract) Garuba (rookie contract) Tari Eason (rookie contract) Jabari Smith (rookie contract) TyTy (rookie contract) Draft Pick #One (summer '24) (rookie contract) Draft Pick #Two (summer '24) (rookie contract) Tate ($6.5 M in 23/24) Mathews (minimal contract) Nix (minimal contract) Bruno Fernando (minimal contract) and we (Rockets) can't afford one contract approximately $15M to $20M with a new TV deal coming. Crock of ####. Just saying.
I know one thing for sure. There has been a million words spent on KPJ and Sengun combined. One of them will likely not be a starter or even on the Rockets team at all for the 2023/2024 season. It will be either another top 5 pick or a traded for max player. My guess is it will be a guard and Sengun will remain.
To that I say why not? I said when the draft order came out, look for the Magic to select Banchero. *They have facilitators running point in Fultz, Cole Anthony and Suggs. Two SG lineups or three guard lineups are going to be more of a thing. You watch. *Spot up Wings in Terrence Ross and fan favorite Franz Wagner (don't need Jabari) *Need a front court guy that can get his own shot (next to Bamba, Okeke, Wendell Carter). League is blatant share the wealth pass the ball don't hold it......Porter is raw at PG as this was his first full season running point.....but money has a way of showing people the light. We talking in excess of making about $23M more than what he is getting paid right now. Oh yeah, he be sharing the ball next year.
