Feels like Peña goes down 0-2 every single AB. He needs to get it together.

He hit .315/.391/.550 in 2017 & .279/.358/.568 in 2019. Those are superstar numbers regardless of position. The only SS in the last 100 years that is clearly ahead of Correa offensively is ARod.

He missed half the season in 2019, 2020 was so short and even in a healthyish 2021 he missed some time (much like this season). Even with his injuries (and COVID), he's averaged 5 rWAR in his career. You are getting an MVP-caliber player when he's on the field.

Those are pretty good numbers. Better OPS+ than Derek Jeter, Miguel Tejada, Ernie Banks, Nomar Garciaparra, Cal Ripken, Robin Yount, and basically every SS besides Honus Wagner and Alex Rodriguez.

Let his career play out before you compare him to those greats. Nomar was probably better than all those guys his first 6 years before he fell off the cliff.

Even after Nomar fell off the cliff with injuries, his career avg and slugging % still better than Correa’s.

He's still been healthier, and required less surgical procedures, than all the other players I mentioned during that time.

All guys are going to miss time here/there. The biggest concern was the back that would flare up at any moment... I'd say 3 years of relative stability there is a good sign, especially for a condition (whatever it may be) that doesn't require surgery.

It likely prevents him from really pushing the power numbers that many thought he would grow into... but if he's playing elite defense and putting up the WAR you mentioned, he's going to be worth it for his prime years (and like all stars, not worth it for the non-prime years).

So you're saying he should be paid like he's on the field even when he's not. Works for Tatis and Scherzer.

They're waaaaaay more new school (whatever that means) than that.

Every team has proprietary knowledge (databases and algorithms if you will) to give an idea of everything from future value, to prospect cost, to pitch/swing mechanics, to defensive positioning, to how often you should rest players. Using AI to help determine injury risk on players was the last one that blew my mind.

That’s because someone is guaranteeing his non peak years. 6/180 was a terrible contract for him to be offered. Just awful.

180 million dollars would probably cover my non-peak years.

I’m 44. I have e at least 21 more years of career earnings. I’d like to think I can do better than 1.8…

True. I would just take the 1.8 and still get another job. Retire a few years early.
