Kershaw never holds up. Can Tyler Anderson keep this up? What about Tony Gonsolin? Will Walker Buehler be healthy? Their offense though...
Have I ever said that Defense was mainly about making errors? Boy, I sure make some of y'all feel some kind of way.
dWAR is a meaningless stat for judging level of defense from a 1B, it's extremely difficult to not be negative . It's your defensive "value", and defense from first base doesn't carry much. Only DH carries less. You are penalized for playing offense first positions, and you get a bonus for playing premium defensive positions.
And if the answer to those are yes more than no? My point is that no one is really a favorite come playoff time, and if there was a favorite it has to be the Dodgers.
We've been the favorite in the PS and the WS in particular, by a wide margin and that didn't work out so well for us so I'll be just fine with letting LA have that title when the time comes. All things being equal and LA fully healthy I'm biased but we have the better arms. None of that matters if we cant score runs.... (duh)
Urias has been more than solid for them and they have May coming back. If their rotation holds up, they are very, very strong.
I don't disagree. It isn't easy to win even if you have the best team. The Astros/Dodgers/Yankees have been the clear favorites the last 5 years, and have combined to win only 40% of those titles.
You may or may not like any particular stat. I'm just sharing a stat from Baseball Reference. Pick one you prefer unless you only judge by the eye test. In that case, there is nothing objective to work with.
Ok so offense is factord into dWAR is what you are telling me? That makes sense to say he is below replacement level 1B, but it does not mean he is a below average defensive player, right?
No, I don't just pick a stat to make a point I try and find out how that stat is compiled and judge accordingly and it seems dWAR is more about offense than defense. dWAR is a meaningless stat for judging level of defense from a 1B, it's extremely difficult to not be negative . It's your defensive "value", and defense from first base doesn't carry much. Only DH carries less. Thanks, @sealclubber1016
Shouldn't players get penalized for playing positions that require less defensive skill and providing less defensive value to the team? Gurriel relative to other first basemen was about average for most of his MLB career with 1-2 good years of defense more recently (though not this year). It has been a while since I've listened to road team audio feeds, but there were about 25 "best in the business" defensive 1B every year when I did. For the most part, guys that play 1B can scoop the ball out of the ground and field grounders right at them (i.e. They look good to the eye...especially for a person's team).
I really don't see where OFFENSE is factored in in any way. Positional weighting has more to do with the effect the position has defensively on runs saved or wins created. WAR factors in oWAR and dWAR, but not equally and probably adjusted for position. I do not know of a major stat which includes controlling baserunners, though there is bound to be one.
Yes they should. I'm not sure why you're quoting me like I called the validity of the stat into question. What you do in the batters box in meaningless in the defensive calculation, merely what position you are playing, and how well you are playing it. An average SS will have a good dWar, an average 1B will have a negative dWAR He has been a little below average defensive first baseman this season, at least as far as defensive range is concerned. He certainly hasn't been for his whole career though. The difference in that regard between an above average and below average defensive first baseman really isn't much.
Yeah, that's what I got out of it. I understand the concept and can be persuaded that Yuli is a below replacement level guy at this point with his hitting issues, I was just pushing back on the narrative that his defense was below average.
dWAR EVERY YEAR except 2016 was below zero. Not far below, but below. If you think he was above average, then criticize the STAT and I suggest finding another unless you want to give Yuli the Jeter treatment.
One problem with some of the traditional defensive stats, it will penalize players on teams with heavy strikeout pitchers...
