Fun Stats from '87, in 211 IP: 6 GIDP 45-7 stolen bases 1 Sac Fly 10 WP, 4 HBP (shockingly low, to me) Stros scored 113 runs in his 34 starts. They scored 4+ runs in 9 of them. Stros lost 16 starts where he gave up 2 or fewer runs. He got the L in 4 2-1 games and one 1-0 game.
Last year, Smith was a high leverage reliever for the World Series champions. Obviously Smith is not that type of reliever this year … yet. If the Astros pitching staff can fix Smith, he could be a key piece to another deep playoff run. If the Astros can not fix Smith, he does not make the playoff roster.
Most importantly, if he accepts his player option (which I expect him to at this point), we're no longer on the hook for it, the Braves are. Will Smith also has an option, but it's a team option ($13M with a $2M buyout IIRC, which is much better).
