Probably should stay away from Sichuan food across the board, then. Not an expert, but Sichuan peppercorns + spicy heat pretty much defines Sichuan food.
Oh man that Chenjeh Sultani is so freaking good. I love Karsa's but I love Avesta even more which is not far from Karsa.
I was browsing through a thread from HAIF "Houston's original social network" (they call themselves) that's in houstonarchitecture.com (awesome site, some of you know it) that's called Defunct Historic Houston Restaurants, and boy, do I know a lot of them. Since I moved to Austin in 1980, when I think of Houston's eateries, I tend to think of those I used to go to before I moved. Threads like Fatty's help keep me current. ;-) Anyway, I ran across this copy of a menu, a little hard to read, from a well known Houston restaurant, the sort of place my parents would have gone to eat for a special occasion in 1941, before WW2. It closed in 1987. Check out the prices. That was when a dollar was a dollar, my friends. I’ll add it to my try list. I’m in Pearland/Friendswood so Kasras works for me in league city. I’ll make the trip out that way though for some good food lol
I haven't been in several years now, but Avesta's menu was basically exactly the same as Kasra. My understanding is someone who worked at Kasra decided to open a competing restaurant.
Yep, I guess it shows my age and years not being in Houston. That is exactly it. Damn good bbq. Love their sauce. And I used to have them do briskets for me as well. The BBQ is just ok in my opinion but tge sauce at Luling (off Richmond) Is something that I order a case of a year.
And it's odd that Houston must try using dishes. Most restaurants had dishes when I lived there, but I guess peeps eat out of a trough now to save on expenses? Maybe Tilman innovated that.
I like to try different things so it's hard to pick a dish. Things I know I'll get each time, off the top of my head. Candente nachos go hard - these are the kind where each nacho is prepped individually. Nick Wong's crispy fried rice salad. Used to be at UB Preserve but it pops up other place now. I like AL's Quick Stop over Niko's. Blue cheese fries at Bernie's Burger Bus (RIP). Crispy potatoes at Loro (lol). Frozen coffee at Common Bond. Someone mentioned Mai's. Not my fav. But they do have some jalapeno dish IIRC that people SHOULD try (if they like spice).
Cheese Enchiladas at El Meson Pork and Cheese Pupusas at Mama Rosa’s Pupuseria House Special Rice Cake at Tan Tan
Excellent thread for giving me ideas. I'm making a trip to Houston in the near future and my plans are basically: 1. See people 2. Eat like a ****ing idiot 3. Stros game(s) Not necessarily in that order.
