Oh man, what if this deal falls apart because Preller gave Hosmer a no trade clause as part of that ridiculous contract?
Lol what? Why would them trading for Soto suddenly necessitate them trading away Snell for an another OFer?
The SD prospects are far superior to Astros by scouts and evaluators. For example, Hunter Brown, Pedro Leon, and Korey Lee together are probably not as valuable as Abrams
Come postseason time, an opposing pitcher has to face: Machado, Tatis, Soto, and Bell. Not to mention a few other Padres in that lineup that have an OPS over .730. Talk about prospects, talk about building for the future, talk about farm system yada yada... One thing is clear- They're all in and that lineup is STACKED.
That might be the biggest prospect package ever sent out in a single trade. The Nats should be extremely good 2 years from now. Ruiz, Abrams, Garcia, House, Hassell, Wood, and Green on offense and Gray, Gore, Cavalli, Susana, Bennett, and Henry on the pitching staff. That’s like 13 Top 100 prospects all percolating. Huge. That Padres lineup might have 4 of the top 20 hitters in the league. It’s sick.
I remember when Astros lineup was that stacked...so that's how it feels to be jealous..lol When are the Astros trading for Happ?
its a really top heavy lineup with overrated pitching. Yeah they're going all in, but it won't be good enough to come out of the NL past LAD,ATL, or even the mets probably I'll watch though lol
Right now until/unless the team gets another CF, McCormick is essential to this lineup. As bad as that may be.
The Padres give up some pretty good prospects, but none of them are can't miss. Robert Hassell III is an outfielder with a similar pedigree to Kyle Tucker. He was the 8th pick in the 2020 draft out of high school and has played well in the minors. James Wood is also an outfielder and he went in the second round in 2021, largely because he was expected to want a large signing bonus. He is only 19 years old but he has done very well in the low minors. He won't make a lot of top 100 prospect lists because of his age and where he is in the minors, but he is definitely a top 100 prospect in baseball, and likely a top 50 prospect right now. CJ Abrams is a shortstop and was a top 6 pick in the 2019 draft. He was a high schooler and produced very well in the minors. He has struggled a little with the Padres this year, but no one is worried about him. He was a top 10 prospect before being called up. Jarlin Susanna is a teenage pitcher that was the #1 pitching prospect in the 2022 international draft. He is very highly valued accordingly. McKenzie Gore is a former #1 pitching prospect in baseball that has long been viewed as elite. He was a top 3 pick out of high school back in 2017. I would argue that this is a pretty good haul for the Nationals...... They basically got the best upside prospects the Padres have...... there are a lot of high draft picks in this group. If I were a nationals fan I would be happy personally. They lose Bell, who wasn't coming back and they lose Soto..... who is an incredible hitter but he is a mediocre fielder, and he is a free agent after the 2024 season. His agent also made the comment that half a billion dollars isn't enough to sign Soto. I think that this move is a far bigger risk for the Padres than the Nationals who were going to lose Soto anyway. The big winner? Boras who now has a gun against the Padres head.
This really comes down to how risk adverse owners/GM's are. Crane has proven he's willing to gamble. Now it's up to Click to follow in Luhnows footsteps. So far so good.
Nope. It would be very hard for the Astros to make a similar deal because the Astros lack prospects with the upside that the Padres dealt. There were a number of high schoolers over slot, taken high in the draft going to the Nats.
