The only purpose of the farm system in San Diego (and it is a good one overall) is so that the GM can make trades. I strongly suspect he even trades his wife from time to time. He isn't especially great at knowing which young players to hold on to either.
Yeah, he reminds me a lot of Maldy just before Maldy was acquired by the Astros. Would seem to be a good fit if he can be had for a reasonable price.
The best fielding centerfield across baseball is us from what i can tell. Getting more offense out of CF without a defensive drop off seems tricky. I sorted all mlb teams by Rtot on baseball reference for centerfield. Ignoring other playoff teams, the name Alek Thomas comes up... 22 years old with limited experience. I wonder what he would cost us? I might be good with Hunter Brown and a piece given his age and try him while our recent centerfield picks develop... His minor league numbers are a notch below Tucker at the same age....
Only reason Preller still has a job is thanks to swindling Fernando Tatis Jr from the White Sox for James Shields.
I hope they have some ideas as well. Yeah, and I think they could have done it better too most likely.
I’m in a bad headspace this morning overall so I’m going with the sinking feeling the rich get richer and we stand pat.
The Cubs are bizarre. They are 20 games under .500 They still have Contreras, Happ, Robertson and Givens. All are very highly valued and all are free agents. They really seem like they over played their hand. If they fail to trade them, it is negligence by the front office and ownership. The Giants I somewhat understand. They are still trying to make the playoffs and have taken the position they will only trade their guys for good value. Yaz is still under contract and Rodon could help them make the playoffs. The Orioles so far have been very cautious in the moves that they have made, they haven't moved anyone under long term control. I am not sure they really want to move Mullins, especially after moving Mancini (even if they plan to bring him back as a FA).
Possibly, but even if the Astros really do not add a lot, they are still in a very good situation. They basically added 200 OPS to the catcher position and they have made it become a playable spot in the batting order. They also added Mancini who, while he has struggled in Camden, he overall is a solid hitter and he can play left field and some first. The Astros also have McCullers coming back healthy as well. I would really love to add Bell and/or a centerfielder, but a lot of that is beyond the Astros control. The Nationals are asking a huge amount for Bell and the Cubs are doing the same for their prospects.
My bold prediction of the day is that Pedro Leon gets called up, he probably will strike out as much as Chas and Jake but the rest of the tools might make him a good 8/9 hitter.
Game approved trade for Reynolds: Astros get: Reynolds 62.2 Polanco 2.4 Mitchell 2.1 Pirates get: Brown 22.7 McCormick 20 Meyers 13.1 Urquidy 11.1 I wouldn't go that high because I think Urquidy has way more value. They have Garcia at 49.1 so if the Pirate felt like the game, I'd feel much better using Garcia plus less for Reynolds and keeping Brown and Meyers. ie: Astros get: Reynolds 62.2 Frazier 6.8 Pirates get: Garcia 49.1 McCormick 20
