Odorizzi has a $3.25M buyout next season compared to $1M for Smith. And if Odo gets hurt, he'll opt in to $6.5M or possibly $12.5M if he hits certain milestones. And he has bonuses at 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150, & 160 innings. Worst case is pretty even salary. Best case the team saves around $15M.
Yeah, thanks to you and @Rock Block for clarifying. I didn’t see that it was a team option for next year, so that actually makes sense now.
Will Smith is a player who has a significant and defined role on the Astros in the postseason as a late inning reliever and a left-handed specialist. Jake Odorizzi's role in a 7-game series is basically limited to long relief opportunities. From that perspective, this trade makes sense. We also create some nice financial space (> $10 million) in the event we don't exercise the 2023 option on Smith.
I think it is a Little Funny that these Athletes can be really Awkward when they just got surprised by a Trade. Big Star Alpha Athletes the Media Portrays, but they are Regular People having a Awkward Moment.
Hope Will regains his old form. He already knows what a WS organization expects from him, so get it done Will.
Completely disagree With Odorizzi's inconsistency and history along with his contract, I'm surprised they got a proven former all star level closer who has been nails in the post season. Huge huge upside for a guy I thought they would only get a lower level prospect.
so we traded a starting pitcher for an older relief pitcher, who's got a higher ERA than our starting pitcher that we traded. wow.
I don’t know if it will be easy to evaluate this trade until we see what they do next year with the money Odorizzi would have been owed. This isn’t likely to move the needle much this year one way or the other. I always thought Odorrizi got a worse wrap from the fans than he deserved, so it’s good to see him moved somewhere he’ll hit a few more contract incentives while getting someone back with potential upside.
Gold Star post right there. We are in the greatest era of Astro pitching which is saying something for a franchise that has sported the likes of the 1986 Mike Scott, Nolan Ryan, Jimmy D, Bob Knepper, Danny Darwin. A more recent 2005 Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Roy Oswalt, Brandon Backe, Wandy Rodriguez or how about the one that got away of Randy Johnson, Shane Reynolds, Mike Hampton, Jose Lima, Sean Bergman. There is even a staff that was highly underrated combo Doug Drabek, Darryl Kile, Mark Portugal, Greg Swindell, Pete Harnisch these guys were good in 1993. My personal favorite JR Richard, Nolan Ryan, Joe Niekro, Ken Forsch, Vern Ruhle. Before there was "a hamstring away" we had JR Richard stolen from us by a stroke in the middle of 1980, this dude was becoming the most fear pitcher in baseball entering his prime and he was followed up by Nolan Ryan. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. Anyways yes fans are spoiled when they hate a pitcher that is 4/5th starter and he keeps you in most games and is league average.
