Ferengis had universal translator implants in their ears. The Federation seem to use ships/com badges along with in-ear implants to do the translation. It has always been unclear how the universal translators work...exactly, except in that Deep Space 9 episode.

Star Trek : Enterprise tried to somewhat "explain" it in a few episodes. The third video is pretty cool, but of course, Hoshi was more unbelievable than the Universal Translator... lol. "In the old days" of Enterprise, the universal translator's processor had to encounter a species and figure out their language by processing their speech for a while. BONUS POINTS if you can tell who that Klingon is in the 2nd video :

That security chief gave me Carissa Drummer vibes from the Expanse. Drummer's a badass so I guess it's sincere flattery.

Oddly, Nurse Chapel's look and attitude is similar to Bean from Disenchantment.

I waited for all the most recent seasons to complete, found a "one month free offer" on Paramount+ offer and just binge-watched the latest seasons of Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. Just gotta remember to cancel before they charge me for next month. lol.

Strange New Worlds was decent. It was a lot more mundane/tame than Discovery which was more action-packed. SNW had one or two dud episodes. I like the characters, for the most part. Mixed in with that were some pretty good episodes. Ethan Peck's Spock is awesome. His interaction with T'Pring was hilarious at points. Nurse Chapel rocks. She plays an American very well. :D

It's kind of nice everybody has a little storyline and backstory kind of set by the end of the first season. They even gave Uhura a reason for being in this series. She's more than a switchboard operator. lol. :D

Character development a huge plus for snw.

What did you think about the last season of Discovery?

Better than anything SNW had to offer.

Discovery is like a mile-a-minute action. Probably 90% of the episodes seem like a movie that's all over the place. I like it, but the entire premise of what was going on seemed kind of hokey at the end. Somewhat believable, but not so believable. At the end it was kind of like "really?" One thing I found hilarious about Discovery was whenever the ship was hit hard and damaged.... here come the sparklers indicating damage on the same pylons/columns on the bridge. It got to be comedic. On SNW, it's like they replaced the sparklers with "smoke" to indicate damage. :D

BTW, it's kind of neat that quite possibly the most comical/silly fight in all Star Trek (sci-fi?) history from Star Trek : TOS involved an alien species that's now shown as being lethal fighters and the most dangerous encounter in SNW. A species that you apparently don't want to cross.

It's kind of weird because SNW's characters seem more likeable/believable/realistic to me to this point, but we'll see how that goes as the seasons run. I like the action in Discovery, but more of the characters in SNW. The story/plot/characters in Discovery seem way more forced to me. I guess I like each of them for different reasons. I love both series, though.

Picard makes me sad, on the other hand, because they probably have the worst characters... ones that seem to keep changing, and poor Picard has gotten too old to really do anything much to save the show. From what I understand, the next season is supposed to bring back a bunch of the TNG cast as a swan song of sorts for them.

I think Discovery has worn out its welcome for me. I want SNW to work, so I'll give their first season the benefit of the doubt.

Oh, I want SNW to succeed. Just S1 was not as strong as anything Discovery has offered so far. Hoping it gets better and rooting for it
