North Carolina: Entire town's police force quits; update: Now entire Colorado town's police says bye

Public sector unions should be illegal.

 

Interesting, the new town manager on the job for a month and the entire PD is quitting, the mayor and council think she's doing a good job, the town loves them both. Obviously 2 sides to every story but seems like a knee jerk reaction from the PO PO, to bad they are not explaining why they are leaving to have some context to the story. You would think there would be dialogue before they turned in their 2 week notice.

The Kenly Police Department is comprised of seven officers that are charged with providing full-time public safety to the citizens of Kenly.
 The police department is located within Kenly Town Hall.

The first question that I thought when hearing about an "Entire town's police forces quit" was, "well how many is that?" Being in a small town this doesn't surprise me.

 

City Manager: We have multiple reports of excessive force. There were 100 claims. 98 were from black people 2 were from white people.

Police Chief: Damn it looks like we made 2 mistakes.

 

The police don't do anything on purpose. They are stealing taxpayer dollars.

 

So he shot a black man? We'da dun made him CHIEF in Kenly for that. Crazy yankeeees.

 

On a related note, why in the world do American local governments get their own police departments? There should be state officers and county officers and that's it. And in some cases, multiple counties should share a police force (for example in the tiny counties in West Texas).

It seems like having local police departments is just an awful idea and it just invites tons of corruption and mismanagement along the way.

The Town manager is black. The City is mostly Black and Brown. All the people quitting are white.

 

It should be illegal the moment politicians have the public's best interest at heart. Until then, they need a way to leverage negotiations.

In my small town and in the others that I've been involved with it is not really a race thing, although it is diffidently present. It is more about an outsider coming in and rocking the boat. They want someone who thinks the same as they do so they can continue on with whatever it is they do. Political affiliation and who you know are way more important. Race comes shortly afterward.

 

I don't know if there's anything very wrong about having a local PD. But to your point, Kenly is probably fine without them because they have county officers to rely on. A force of 7 officers for a town of 1,400 people seems like overkill. Defunding seems like the right financial move.

 

Its overkill because it invites so much corruption. It's such a senseless system. In Canada, we have federal police, provincial police and regional/county police. Both regional and provincial police forces are accountable to a independent provincial agency that oversees police. The corruption at the local level doesn't exist here because local governments don't fund or regulate police. Plus think of all the duplication of administrative function when you operate thousands of concurrent police forces. The whole thing seems crazy to me.

 

Not only do we have municipal police, the schools districts have their own, public transit has their own, universities have their own. We have a staggering multiplicity of police forces. But I haven't thought deeply about the pros and cons of centralized or decentralized control of law enforcement.
