Teams don't like taking multi-year contracts as "filler", you realize that right?

In a world where he tanked his value and we want to trade him we'd be having to attach picks to use him as "filler" up until the year he becomes an expiring

We wouldn’t be trading him immediately anyway. It’ll be a 4 year deal at most and we’d trade him towards the end.

A hypothetical trade for an Allstar won’t happen for a couple seasons in the first place. When we’re ready to compete.

Given the youth of our roster and the probability that next year we will actually be below the salary floor, it would be virtually impossible for even a 20m contract for KPJ to hamstring us. I hope they get something done in the 15m or less range, but I’d be ok if it goes up to 20m. Of course, I’m in the camp that KPJ is an up and coming star and will have a breakout year. Now if he has a breakout year, then somebody will create an offer sheet that could indeed hamstring us a bit.

There was straight up talk of cutting KPJ at one point. I guess there's some poverty franchises that never get free agents that could maybe overpay him on an offer sheet but even with a breakout year I'd be REALLY surprised if someone gave him a huge long term offer. Collin Sexton is honestly a decent comparison, look how little interest he has gotten on the market.

I'm not as worried if the deal is something like 2+1 with a team option but people here are throwing out 4 years guaranteed which yes, could hamstring us. Every team I've watched that's stayed mediocre has done it by giving out overpaid long contracts. And honestly we should be keeping our flexibility to take on bad contracts for assets, sign mid-tier free agents, and help facilitate trades where we can get assets while we have these guys on rookie deals. I also don't even think it's out of the realm of possibility that a star wants to go here if we have the max room, we're not a small market.

This is a player though whose floor could have him basically being suspended from the team and completely untradeable. We're literally only a half season removed from this
"Sources said Lucas called out multiple players, including Porter and Christian Wood — who was benched after missing a mandatory COVID-19 testing window — during halftime, focusing on Porter’s play and Wood's effort level. As things escalated, Porter threw an object, needed to be separated from Lucas and then got in his car and left the arena."

Obviously I'm willing to give him another chance after that and I'm glad we worked it out and kept him but giving him huge guaranteed money for long term less than year later is insane and I think most of the league would agree, if he was an RFA right now he'd be in the same place as Sexton and maybe worse off. And that's his own fault

I saw a video on YouTube twenty minutes ago by a guy named Cyro that stated the Rockets and KPJ are trying to negotiate a deal before the start of the new season per Shams Charania.

Sexton is not a good comparison at all. He’s an undersized 2 who is limited defensively and was hurt all last year.

Only if you want to show Jalen Green and Jabari Smith that the franchise is too cheap to play their most talented players..... it's that really the message you want to send? That they need to get out as quickly as possible because this is a poverty franchise.

    I wouldn't send that message

Who talked about cutting KPJ? the media? Clutchfans? Other teams that wanted him? It seems to me the coaches and front office are really high on KPJ and I do suspect he will get an extension of some type. Just for fun let’s assume he gets a 20m 3 year contract. Please inform me of the scenario that we will be hamstrung by it.

A 4 year deal wouldn’t hamstring us at all because the contract would come off the books the same offseason we have to pay Jabari and Tari.

We still have Wall’s 47 mill coming off the books. And then Gordon’s 21 mil coming off. Damn near our whole roster is on rookie deals.

Personal feelings and disdain aside. There is literally no downside if KPJ flames out.

Our core is 20 years old and y’all acting like we have a 2 year championship window or something lol.

If the Rockets are expecting KPJ to make a leap forward this year, I can see them trying to use their leverage to get a beneficial extension locked up. They can use the fact that he hasn't had an incident-free year in the NBA, high turnover rate and relative inefficiency to depress his value. If they can use that to get a bargain, more power to them. If he does make significant improvement this year and doesn't have any issues, they will lose that bargaining advantage. Might ass well test the waters now rather than looking on it in a year as a missed opportunity.

this franchise being cheap is old news. that's besides the point anyway when it comes to kpj. nothing has changed and like clutch said, no reason to address extending him at this point

LOL - that is funny - using my own words.....well played.

But the truth is that 20m or so a year is a drop in the bucket and wouldn't hurt the team at all, there are already teams trying to get him.

Then don't be upset when the other top players choose to leave.

If you don't pay your top players, the franchise will forever stay in tanking mode.

there's no top player here to decide to leave for this to even matter and has nothing to do with the topic. we're supposed to be upset at KPJ leaving? bye

this franchise sucks now because of there prior dumb decisions. Lay it in the bed made
