When I lived in CA I remember seeing devestating floods especially with an El Nino year following bad burns.
I expected it to be bad, but that is beyond bad. Farmers are going to be baling stubble from corn, milo/maize (grain sorghum) and rice. Those with failed crops will be baling whatever is in the field. Two major problems with feeding crop stubble/residue are 1.There is a limited amount of nutrition/energy in crop stubble/residue. So the cattle will need additional feed to keep from being too ran down during the winter. 2. Nitrate levels tend to be higher in drought stressed crops, so ranchers will need to monitor the health of their cattle when using those types of things for feed. 2011? My parents had bought a small amount (4?) bales of rice field stubble so they had enough total bales for the Winter. Their cattle weren't interested in eating the rice field stubble, so it was suggested to apply molasses to the bales. My mother bought some molasses from the feed store and used a handheld garden sprayer to put it on a bale. The cattle would eat the layer with molasses, but would lose interest once they got to the layer underneath that had no molasses. The next day, my mother would apply more molasses and the cattle would eat again. Eventually the cattle ate all of the rice stubble, but it took some effort from my mother to make it happen. Massive heat wave in Europe and the UK is about to set a bunch of records on Monday and Tuesday. Significant fires from Portugal to Croatia, France to Ukraine, and more are expected, including the UK. The deaths in the UK from the heat will likely be in the 100s as there is little AC and their systems are not built for 100+ degree heat, especially in urban areas like London. The real killer will be the nighttime temps which will not cool down enough to give folks relief. There are heatwaves in China, Siberia, the US and just about everywhere in the northern hemisphere. Alaska has a huge number of fires they are dealing with right now. Droughts are even more widespread than wildfires. These heatwaves, wildfires, and droughts across the world are happening within the "safe" climate change boundary of 1.2°C warming since the industrial revolution. We are on course to at least double that. If we don't act rapidly and urgently to get off of fossil fuels, the catastrophes will continue on the exponential curve. This is not D&D. This is the world we are living in now. How we address the fossil fuels problem and the delaying of those solutions are political, but there should be no disagreement about where we are, where we are going, and what we ultimately need to do.
