Teams in contention rarely trade established veteran players for prospects in season.

Prospects are just that. Even if a player becomes Kyle Tucke, He could start out like Kyle Tucker and hurt the playoff chances more than help.

Let me ask you: Do you think the team would be more comfortable with 2018 Kyle Tucker or Chas McCormick the rest of the season?

    2018 Tucker: .439 OPS, 23 OPS+
    Chas: .709 PPS, 101 OPS+

The Dodgers laugh at the Astros payroll of $500M per season

One of the starters(let's say Javier) would be in the deal for Soto and probably Odorizzi goes somewhere else in a trade to free up a bit of money.
I am only suggesting that taking on Corbin makes it more likely than if you did not and had to rely solely on the value of your trade pieces. Taking on Corbin lessens that needed value quite a bit.
I believe there is a 0.01% chance of getting Soto if you don't take Corbin and that goes to 0.2% if you do take him.

What's funny is this kind of trade is exactly what the Astros pull off . Verlander no one thought we were in on him
Grienke no one thought that either

    Miguel Cabrera
    Year: 2007

    • Tigers received: IF Miguel Cabrera, P Dontrelle Willis
    • Marlins received: OF Cameron Maybin, Ps Andrew Miller, Burke Badenhop, Frankie De La Cruz and Dallas Trahern, C Mike Rabelo
    • bWAR after trade: Cabrera, 50.3 | Marlins package, 4.8
The Cabrera trade will be the closest to Soto in terms of age and production at the time of the deal. Though only 24 at the time of the deal, Cabrera had been in the majors for five years and was a World Series champion, but a contract impasse led Miami to move on.

Needless to say, the Tigers got the better of the deal. Cabrera would go on to win two American League MVP awards with Detroit and appear in the 2012 World Series. Maybin and Miller would have solid MLB careers. Badenhop posted a 4.34 ERA in 151 games for the Marlins out of the bullpen.

    Manny Machado
    Year: 2018

    • Dodgers received: IF Manny Machado

      Mookie Betts

      Year: 2020
      • Dodgers received: OF Mookie Betts, P David Price
      • Red Sox received: OF Alex Verdugo, IF Jeter Downs, C Connor Wong
      • bWAR after trade: Betts, 10.6 | Red Sox package, 2.8
The Red Sox were roasted for trading Betts and Price in what ultimately was a salary dump.

Downs made his MLB debut earlier this year, but his ceiling is likely somewhere around utility starter rather than star. Verdugo, who was ascending before the trade, has settled in as a slightly above-average bat with the Sox. Wong has played in just 11 MLB games through two seasons.

Betts signed a 12-year, $365 million extension with Los Angeles after the trade and then finished second in National League MVP voting in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He has followed that up with two big offensive years for Los Angeles.

      Francisco Lindor
      Year: 2021
      • Mets received: IF Francisco Lindor, P Carlos Carrasco
      • Guardians received: IFs Amed Rosario and Andres Gimenez, P Josh Wolf, OF Isaiah Greene
      • bWAR after trade: Lindor, 6.0 | Guardians package, 8.3
This is a trade that has seemed to work out for both sides so far.

Lindor was shipped to the Mets and subsequently signed a 10-year, $341 million contract with New York, getting the money that he probably should have gotten from Cleveland. Lindor has been uneven so far with the Mets, but he's on pace for a 7-WAR season in 2022.

The centerpiece of the trade for Cleveland was Gimenez, and he is having a breakout season in 2022. He was named to his first All-Star team this year and went into the break hitting .296 with 10 home runs. Rosario seems to have found offensive consistency, slashing .285/.323/.407 since landing in The Land. Wolf and Greene have yet to make their MLB debuts

So looking at this should tell you alot

I didn't like Neris when they signed him. However his FIP is 2.80 and when adjusted for defense he should have an era of around 2.50.... so he has had some bad luck so far.

What would be more pertinent to me is listing where/how the trade pieces were rated as far as potential when they were traded.

I know in the Cabrera deal, Maybin and Miller were both considered top 10 prospects in all of MLB.

That more than results will compare what players/prospects are likely to be in the deal.

When Neris is the 4th or 5th best pitcher in the bullpen, you know Click has done his job.

If Neris pitches a huge 1-2-3 inning late in the clinching game of the ALCS, it will have been a great signing

The Neris Astros story is yet to be written

No. I’m not talking about prospects playing this year. I’m talking about them being in the farm and hopefully valuable members of the big league club in 1-3 years. The point is if LMJ is healthy and Brown is ready then we have to create 2 spots. If you create those two spots by trading Odo and Urquidy at the deadline you should be able to get future value (because they’d be valuable to some teams in the WC hunt) without it costing you present value in the big league club.

Trading Odo would be fine, but unless you are acquiring a guy like Castillo, you don’t trade a guy like Urquidy for prospects in a year that you could very well be the best team in baseball

I agree, he's better than the numbers say, but he's maybe the least value of our bullpen guys relative to salary. Stanek and Montero have been better value...

The more I think about it the more I think this deadline is shaping up to favor the Astros. They don’t have any major holes so no seller should consider them desperate. They have a surplus of controllable MLB assets in 2 high-need areas for other teams (starting pitching and outfielders capable of handling CF). They have a deep AAA roster. And they have some financial flexibility. They are in a good spot.

The one thing I am not sure of is just how big Click’s stones are. It was something we worried about with Luhnow up until he made the Gomez trade: whether he had what it took to pull the trigger on a major trade. This roster doesn’t have the same needs as 2015-2017, so standing pat is probably even more tempting for Click. Should be fun to watch and the possibilities are endless.

Brown seems ready. LMJ seems like he’s back any day now. Even if neither of those statements are true (and I believe them to be) Urquidy doesn’t factor in the playoff plans. If you can get good value for him it’s ok to sell on some guys and buy on others

If Brown had already pitched in MLB and looked ready....

If Lance had gone through a rehab and was back and showed no signs of the injury....

Problem is Brown is a pitching prospect. He looks really good. MLB history, both recent and far back, is littered with prospects who looked awesome. Some had immediate mlb success, many did not. Many who were even better than Brown in the minors did not. I really believe that long term Hunter Brown will be a good MLB pitcher, I don't want to be COUNTING ON him to pitch in the playoffs this year

Lance is my favorite Astro. No one wants him to be back and successful this year than me. Truth is though, we aren't going to know how he will hold up until...well, there are probably always going to be concerns about how he will hold up...if he is a stud out of our pen in the playoffs this year, we should all be incredibly happy

As for saying even if neither of those statements are true, Urquidy doesn't factor into the playoff plans.....you seem like someone who has watched baseball long enough to KNOW that isn't necessarily true

I think you have Framber pitching for 2 different teams...
