Citizen United, the court case that significantly moved the US to a plutocracy.

Billionaires contributed $31M in 2010 (before Citizen United)
    Billionaires contributed $1.2B in 2020
    ~40x increase

The billionaires buying the midterm elections (popular.info)

The reliance on billionaire dollars by Republicans and Democrats in 2022 reflects an acceleration of an alarming trend in American politics. Since the Supreme Court eliminated limits on so-called "independent" expenditures by corporations and the wealthy in Citizen's United (2010), political spending by billionaires on federal races has exploded.

During the first two years of the pandemic, the net worth of the 44 billionaires who donated this cycle to the main Democratic and Republican Super PACs increased by $168 billion. These billionaires are now using a small percentage of their extraordinary wealth to shape the federal government to meet their economic and ideological interests.

You can basically peg the beginning of the end of our Democracy to that decision.

I agree. The gap between rich and poor will just get wider and wider and wider, as the billionaires pour all their money into attempting to get a Republican Party led country, where democracy is a thing of the past. Next will be a senate eliminating term limits, and states refusing to certify votes if a Republican candidate is defeated. Then they will make gay marriage illegal, and start stripping away civil rights. They will pardon all their white collar crimes buddies like Trump did and throw the books at small time felons of color. Old white men with billions will ensure it stays that way.

Say hello to a billion guns, millions of assault rifles on the streets, and a country much more dangerous than any modern world country. It will be a future of a billion guns, millions more uninsured, pharmaceutical companies skyrocketing prices that uninsured can't afford, and millions more homeless on the streets. Unwed teen mothers with babies they can't take care of will skyrocket.

The GOP is becoming more radical by the day. The billionaires don't care if their policies make them wealthier.

    Thank you Supreme Court.

Never forget that Hitler did not take power because he had a winning message for the German people. Hitler took power because the German 1%ers were so afraid of paying taxes that they saw him as a useful tool to keep and grow their wealth. I will NEVER trust the most wealthy, greedy, and self serving people in the world to make the best political decisions for our country.

I suggest getting a backup country that isn't Canada. Ideally outside of Europe as well. An American refugee crisis would be a cluster**** worldwide, not to mention we'd see the global economy completely tank.

Buy experiences, not things. For just a handful of billions, the mega elite of our country can have a great time!

    2020 elections cost 14 billion

They also play both sides, so there's no way to vote for any real change.

Meet the biggest if the billionaire donors from the article above.

Griffin spent $54 million in a successful effort to defeat a ballot initiative that would have increased the tax rate for anyone making more than $1 million in Illinois, his home state, from 4.95% to 7.99%. (Anyone making under $100,000 would have received a tax cut.)

Griffin spent about $18 per vote to defeat the initiative. But it was a good investment. Defeating the initiative has saved Griffin about "$51 million every year in extra tax." In June, Griffin announced he was moving Citadel to Miami anyway, a state with no income tax. Griffin is one of the largest donors to Governor Ron DeSantis (R).

I doubt most older Americans like me would leave. The new generations won't know what life was like in a real Democracy though. If Republicans have their way term limits will disappear. Hopefully that doesn't ever happen, but then again, the majority of them still support a man who lies to this day and has proven that he will do anything to win. If they would vote for a man who tried to steal an election they certainly will in the future. If all but 10 wouldn't vote to impeach a man like that then the sky is the limit on what they would allow their future leader to do.
