He’s not on the 40 man roster so they’d have to make room there. I want to see him out of the bullpen in August and September so I’m fine with doing it now, but it doesn’t seem like a super Astros kind of thing to do.
J.C. Correa went 2-4 with a 2-run homer (6) in Asheville's rain-shortened 6-2 win today. .311/.363/.458 with 6 homers, 41 RBI, and 23 strikeouts in 278 plate appearances (8.3%) seems alright. Asheville effect applies though (.375/.413/.529 at home, .235/.305/.374 on the road).
Justin Dirden went 3-5 with an RBI double and Shay Whitcomb hit his 10th homer of the year. Unfortunately, Corpus pitchers gave up 11 runs in the final three innings in a 16-7 loss.
Astros need to make moves on the 40 man regardless. Yanier Diaz is rule 5 eligible this year. As for Brown, you can always drop someone like Goodrum from the 40 man and option JJ back to the minors.
Agreed. The point is that you don’t necessarily do it just for a lark with 1 day call up. It’s going to be part of a greater strategy.
Is the 13 pitcher limit still in effect? If so, it's not as easy as sending JJ down as you would have to get rid of a pitcher. Maybe there's a trade that would send out a pitcher opening that pitching spot for Brown, but when Lance returns, another pitching move would need to be made. Though I find these as good problems to have.
Bingo. Brown is a guy you make a move for to help the team this year and for the long term. Unless Brantley is done and/or they decide to do something drastic, and maybe not even then, Diaz has no place on this team this season.
Fayettevilles lineup should look a lot deeper in a couple weeks assuming they don’t promote Cerny and Loperfido: CF Gilbert 2B Loperfido RF Melton SS Whitaker 3B Williams 1B Mascai DH Rivas C Palma LF Hallmark/Orr
Curious where they start Gilbert at. More walks then strikeouts, I like that, but Seth Beer had a 2-1 BB to SO stick in college. Feels like BEER severely underperformed thus far.
I expect him to start in Fayetteville although I don’t think Asheville is too aggressive at all. I think he’s ready for High A already, but I think the team will start everyone at Fayetteville (or lower).
When is the rule 5 draft? Is that the deadline for us to have to have Diaz on the 40 man? No way he should be exposed.
The draft is in December, I believe the protection date is in November; regardless, it’s not until after the season. I agree Diaz will for sure need protection, as will Hunter Brown and Enmanuel Valdez. Those 3 will be protected for sure. Others who would have risk of being selected are Corey Julks, David Hensley, Wilyer Abreu, and JP France. Lower risk guys would be Angel Macuare, Julio Robaina, Jordan Brewer, Grae Kessinger, Alex McKenna, Ross Adolph, and Cesar Salazar.
The good news is that free agents fall off the 40 man before these prospects need to be protected. The Astros more free agents than the past JV, Odorizzi, Montero, Yuli, Brantley, Castro, and Diaz will open up 7 spots on the 40 man. Of course they and/or others could be extended, resigned, or traded for between now and then.
All of the US-based affiliates were off, but the DSL was not. Both games were shortened by rain. Darwin De Leon hit his 4th homer of the year in the Orange team's 6-1 win over the Red Sox Red team. He and Luis Baez both finished 2-2 on the morning. Sandy Gaston went 2-3 with a triple and Daniel Castro's solo homer (1) was the difference in the Blue team's 1-0 over the Royals' Stewart team. Alain Pena allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over five shutout frames.
Not sure how much longer they're gonna leave Gaston down on the island, doesn't seem to serve too much of a purpose.
But the draftees, especially college draftees which is what they took, don't usually make MORE room for guys to move up from the rookie leagues.
I agree that many underperforming guys will be let go. MLB has a roster limit on minor league players now so every new draft pick means someone from the current system loses a job.
