It's why they're bottom three in Draft WAR since 2010. And that's WITH Aaron Judge providing 30 of their 55 draft WAR. To be fair, they preform much better amongst foreign free agents.

Although he has pulled double duty at Tennessee and has run his fastball up to 93 mph in a relief role, he has emerged as a better prospect as a center fielder. He homered four times in seven postseason games last June to help the Volunteers reach the College World Series for the first time since 2005, then was the best hitter on a club that ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of this season. A fiery competitor who plays with a lot of emotion, Gilbert has an aggressive approach but also the hand-eye coordination to regularly barrel balls. His left-handed swing can get big when he gets too concerned with home runs, and he'd be a better hitter if he focused more on making quality contact. His bat speed and strength give him enough raw pop to hit 15-20 homers per season without selling out. Gilbert has solid to plus speed and will steal and take extra bases. While he's not a true burner, his quickness and instincts allow him to run down balls from gap to gap in center field. His plus arm strength would allow him to play anywhere in the outfield, and he also showed feel for spinning a curveball and aptitude for throwing a changeup while drawing some Tim Collins comparisons in high school. — MLB 18. Drew Gilbert, OF, Tennessee Gilbert was a two-way prospect out of a Minnesota high school but had a strong commitment to Tennessee, so he wasn’t drafted until the hometown Twins took him in the 35th round in 2019. He’s only thrown 16 innings for the Vols, none this spring, but he’s turned into a premium defensive center fielder with a strong eye at the plate and ability to hit for average. Gilbert rarely swings and misses, staying back even through contact, with minimal weight transfer — possibly an avenue for a player development group to try to get another half-grade of power out of him. In center, he’s a 6 defender with a 6 arm, doing it more with reads and instincts than pure speed, as he’s just a tick above average as a runner. The defense and contact skills give him a good chance to be a regular, although there’d have to be something more — more power, greater patience — to make him a star. — Keith Law Who is Gilbert? The face of the most dominant offensive team in recent college baseball history, Gilbert is known for his brash play with the Vols. He hit .362 with a 1.128 OPS on his way to All-SEC honors in 2022. With a high-contact approach and above-average speed to go along with his all-out style, veteran outfielder Brett Gardner is a good place to start when looking for a comp. — ESPN
Brewers take Brown from Coastal. Really want Melton from Oregon State, but I'll also be happy with either Tennessee outfielder.
Lulz. Bspn trying to make the mlb draft more popular like the NFL or NBA draft. Stretching this out as much as possible. I wonder if manfred told teams to take time in between picks.
The first member of the Houston Astros' 2022 draft class is... Round 1, Pick 28: Drew Gilbert, OF, Tennessee
Did the Tenn coach say, "There's a lot of guys around the country that don't like him"? We getting another Bregman type?
His interview makes me like him even more. I hope we get a College LHP (Whisenhunt) and College middle infielder (Schobel) with our two second rounders. Then if we have the $$$, a HS guy who dropped in the third.
Really like the pick, we need a vocal leader in this next window of players and he can stay in CF. Hardnosed guy, should be pretty quick mover in the minors, maybe not a whole lot of upside but solid tools across the board. Hoping with our next picks we don't waste them on a Grae Kessinger/Nolan Fontana type guy
As much as I loved Luhnow, and as good as he was in nearly every aspect of being a GM, second round picks were the one weakness. Hard to complain when he was so good otherwise and we continue to reap the benefits of his success, but he had a horrible track record with second round picks. I'm rooting for Kessinger to somehow turn things around and at least play into a utility role but I was never too excited about that pick when we made it, and felt like he was more of a 5th round talent.
Can't say I am not disappointed about passing on Connor Prielipp. But I like Drew Gilbert and if he is all his coach claimed he should be great.
