The fight in the Trump White House after the 2020 election was the same fight that’s still going on in the GOP. It isn’t between conservatives and RINOs. It’s between people who give a damn about evidence and people who don’t.

On that point, the committee asked Cipollone about the Dec. 18 White House meeting. In that encounter, Sidney Powell, Mike Flynn, and other election-fraud conspiracy theorists faced off against skeptics led by Cipollone and Trump adviser Eric Herschmann.

“We were asking one simple question,” Cipollone told the committee: “Where is the evidence?” The responses from Powell’s side, he recalled, were statements such as “What do you mean, ‘Where’s the evidence’? You should know.” Powell and her allies, in Cipollone’s account, showed “a general disregard for the importance of actually backing up what you say with facts.”

Herschmann recalled a similar exchange at the meeting. He said Powell refused to accept the dozens of court rulings against Trump’s fraud claims because, she asserted, “The judges are corrupt.” Herschmann’s response to her was: “Every one? Every single case that you’ve done in the country, you guys lost. Every one of [those judges] is corrupt? Even the ones we appointed?”

That’s what the committee wants Trump sympathizers to hear: Even Trump’s lawyers and Trump’s judges found no evidence to support his election conspiracy theories.

In her closing remarks, Rep. Stephanie Murphy, a Democratic member of the committee, summed up the point of the hearing: “Our committee’s overriding objective is to fight fiction with facts.”

And that matters, even if none of the people behind the coup attempt goes to jail.

It is disingenuous to call them RINO - that is not accurate it is a battle between traditional Conservatism and Trumpism......

It's been obvious from the beginning the hearing is about explaining Trump's coup to the people and preparing them for his prosecution. They had all the evidence they needed on day 1 of the hearings. They have been laying out the evidence in a simple manner from the start and hammering home certain points. This is from the opening statement:

"Any legal jargon you hear about seditious conspiracy, obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the United States boils down to this. January 6th was the culmination of an attempted coup, a brazen attempt, as one rioter to put it shortly after January 6th, to overthrow the government. The violence was no accident. It represents seeing Trump's last stand, most desperate chance to halt the transfer of power."

"So, tonight and over the next few weeks, we're going to remind you of the reality of what happened that day, but our work must do much more than just look backwards. The cause of our democracy remains in danger. The conspiracy to thwart the will of the people is not over. There are those in this audience who thirst for power, but have no love or respect for what makes America great, devotion to the Constitution, allegiance to the rule of law, our shared journey to build a more perfect union. January 6th and the lies that led to insurrection have put two and a half centuries of constitutional democracy at risk."

Maybe you should watch the damn thing instead of continuing to blast us with articles and comments justifying and disregarding the coup.

“he is gone now and best forgotten”…This is comedy gold. Trump is the presumptive RNC nominee until he dies, and he still controls the party.

trump is the burden that republicans get to bear until he is dead or renounced. Yeah, you’re probably tired of it. But the idea that he is gone is absurd and you know it.

it is the moral imperative of any right thinking American to make sure that it is never forgotten that trump is a piece of sh-t, corrupt, unfit for office, criminal …. That got hundreds of millions of people to vote for him twice and to elect him as president once. The country should never ever be allowed to forget that.

Because guess what, once the bar was lowered by Trump, we have seen a non stop flood of people just like him seeking public office on the Republican side.

So, yeah, I don’t think ol Trumpy is gone. You guys get to bear that burden until he doesn’t control the Republican Party.

 

Trump is America's version of the Graccus Brothers. He's not impressive enough to be Caesar, but without the Graccus Brothers, Caesar is not possible.

You need to identify and repair the cracks in the marble, else the next guy who comes along finds it so much easier to break the whole thing into pieces.

Though I'm pretty sure for some that's the whole point.

No, he wouldn't. It is ridiculous to blame Biden or Democrats for the fact that Republicans support him and wish for him to be the nominee over other Republicans.

Republicans can denounce him and any who follow or advertise his election lies as legitimate. They could have done so at any point. But for some reason when they do (Liz Cheney) they are removed from leadership positions they once held and lose their primaries to Trump allies. The people voting in those primaries are largely Republicans and not Democrats.

I don't believe for a second that the majority of the Trump GOP party believes the vote was stolen. The evidence showed the opposite. They also know he committed numerous crimes but would vote for him again to get back in power.

Although many still spread the lie, like Trump himself, the rest just sit back and cower to call them out. At this point, they have sold out on Democracy, and are bowing to a Trump Autocracy/Fascist form of government over a Democratic Nation where all the people's votes are counted.
