Would push for that trade or ask for both Josh Bell and Yadial Hernandez??? That way we can get a bench player aswell who covers us incase of an injury or day off????
I don't think anybody is saying this But I will point out with Lee catching they pitchers only have up one run. So maybe just maybe some of these intangibles Maldonado brings are just a little bit overrated. Or maybe Lee also possesses some of these intangibles.
Hernandez is not bad choice, value wise. They have him at $0.7M so Washington may just throw him in and still get excess value. The problems I see with it are 1) he's another LH outfielder. That would make Chas probably a better fit. 2) there are only 4 bench spots and 1 has to be a catcher. Bell/Yuli would take 1, Diaz would take another. Do you want your final bench spot to go to a guy who only plays corner OF? There would be no back up CF.
Blackmon I can see keeping because he's spent his entire career there and it isn't like they are likely to get much for him while paying most of his salary.
Part of the problem with being in such a weak division is that all 4 of the other teams will be sellers. Each team has players that would look really good in orange and navy. Rangers - Heim Mariners- France Angels- Walsh A's- Montas, Murphy But I HATE it when Tony Kemp or Abraham Toro etc. face the Astros. It suddenly feels like they are Ted Williams. I would hate to see a guy like Urquidy or McCormick play for them. And those teams will likely expect more in a trade from the Astros because of division ties.
Mariners aren't sellers. If the playoffs started today they are the 3rd wild card because they have the tie breaker over the Blue Jays after sweeping them in a 4 game series.
The A’s are the only team likely to sell. Rangers and Angels might end up selling rentals last minute but they won’t be trading multiyear players, as they have invested way too much money in the short term to reduce their chances of winning the next couple years.
Am I nuts to think they should stick to college guys? They haven't done a great job of getting those high-round HS picks to the finish line. Tucker's the only high school draftee on the roster. Correa obviously worked out and LMJ has def had his moments but otherwise the track record seems skewed to the college guys. Whatever secret sauce they got going for the IFA pitchers hasn't been nearly as good on the domestic HS pitcher side.
Pretty sure Nook was talking about the Braves reasons for trading for picks. Pretty sure Astros are focused on college bats, as they should be. Hopefully they’re more Jeremy Pena than Grae Kessinger.
Depends on your scouting and player development staff quality. The Braves obvious have hit big on some players the last 5-6 years, and they likely are trying to get future prospects that will be ready when some of their top guys are reaching free agency or are expensive. Braves have to be fairly confident with their scouting staff and the Royals likely feel good about their player development group. Most likely the Royals win the trade because two of the players should end up as big leaguers to some degree, but I like the upside for the Braves. I wouldn't mind the Astros looking at making similar deals.
I meant the Braves are likely looking at toolsy high school kids. As for the Astros, I think it is whatever they want to do - they have earned that trust at this point. Click is actually more aggressive than Luhnow in some ways, but that mostly is in the international draft. I will say that I know the Astros have been considering how the NIL money and injuries will figure into all of this. Landon Sims, Connor Prielipp, Peyton Pallette are the college arms I have heard discussed. There was talk of Jordan Beck and Henry Bolte earlier this year. If I had to guess, I wouldn't be surprised if they go with Walter Ford because of his upside and the belief they can "coach him up". I know someone in the Astros front office really likes that kid from Barbe HS in Louisiana. He doesn't have a set position and he is only like 17-18 years old but they think he is just going to be a top player potentially because of his makeup and skill set.
We've done multiple trades with the As, and had the Graveman deal with the Ms. Heck, both Hank Conger & Maldy came in trades with the Angels. The Angels will probably only look to trade pending FAs like Syndergaard (who they may prefer to try and extend). Seattle is currently a playoff team The Rangers are probably looking to try and contend in 2023, and have a shot at making the playoffs this year.
what ever trade we do I hope atleast for our sake its someone decent not someone we think isnt worth it
And today should be the day with Yordan hurt and may need a little more time to heal up. This is why I think Josh Bell would be perfect it gives said player time to accommodate themselves
I feel like they should trade Trout and Ohtani. I know they wouldn't, but it would be interesting to see what they could get, and at this point they just need an entire refresh on the whole damn thing. Do you really want to pay those two guys 80 a year for your team to continue to gargle balls? I have no idea what anyone elses system looks like, but for Trout I'd say something like (from the Astros) Brown, Leon, Chaz, Javier, Garcia. That could basically slot out 3 of their 5 starters necessary and they could spend the extra $40,000,000 they aren't paying trout anymore signing a legit ace and an Odorizzi type. Would this Angels team be better with Ace, Javier, Garcia, Brown and Odorizzi, with Chaz and Leon in CF or what they currently have? I'd argue they'd be better after the trade. Would the Astros make such a deal? Boy, you'd have to swallow hard, but if they extended JV that leaves them JV/LMJ/Framber/Urquidy/Bielak? Would that rotation be good enough to work if you had Trout plugged in? I'm NOT suggesting this as a trade- this is literally just a thought experiment for me. I assume Anaheim would say no. I think I assume that b/c I assume they are stupid. I assume the Astros would say no as well- but what if the Angels threw in 20 million a year? I think that kind of Astros team with the weakened rotation and Mike ****ing Trout on the team probably wins less regular season games but then becomes even more of a mother****er in the playoffs when depth of roster quality is not as important as top end roster quality. I can't even fathom what a deal for Ohtani would look like or how it could make sense to the Astros with him only having 1.5 years worth of club control left. I guess if we were just going talent for talent something like Meyers, Leon, Javier and Urquidy. Too light? Too heavy? I wouldn't do this deal if I was the Astros- would you do it if you were the Angels? TLDR It would be fascinating to see what would happen if the Angels put Trout and Ohtani on the market and I'm pretty sure I would do that if I were their GM.
If we are going with College bats this year (and that makes total sense to me) and he's available in round 3 I really really really would like to see the Astros take the Hispanic Titanic (Ivan Melendez- the 1b for Texas with the golden spikes award) for personal reasons, but I haven't run into anyone that thinks he's particularly likely to be a plus major league hitter.
Up to the point where they aren't making money anymore, they're not trading Trout and Ohtani. It's bad for baseball that two generational talents languish on a terrible team/organization. But from Arte Moreno's POV, those two generate a disproportionate amount of interest and money relative to the on-field success. He'd be nuts to trade them away.
All 3 of those arms have had TJ recently so I’m wondering if the plan might be to take one of them in the 1st getting an under slot signing due to injury risk, then take both Bolte and Guidry with their next picks. That would be a pretty big haul in terms of ceiling talent.
