I’ve mentioned him like 100 times in this thread. I don’t think he’s available and now that Meyers is looking good and Maldy has seen an uptick in hitting the fit isn’t quite as perfect although I still think he’d be a good add.
I agree that Houston’s pen is very deep and there isn’t a big need. But in the absence of any other glaring holes and looking at market dynamics (and front office core competency) it would make sense to me that going and getting a RP they think represents a good value would be better than standing pat entirely. Bottom line is that if everyone stays healthy and performs the way they have over the last month then the roster is complete.
Do you trust Yuli? He has been hot lately but for July his xwOBA is still less than .320 with the average for 1B this season being about .340. Not really indicative of a return to form imo. His fielding also leaves a lot to be desired in spite of his reputation among fans. Also, I think Castro is probably done. Are they comfortable rolling with Maldy and Lee in the post-season? What if Maldy were to get hurt?
I believe in Gurriel enough to stick with him as a 6 or 7 hole hitter. I also like Matijevic as an alternative if Gurriel falters. If there were a 1B with a proven track record of excellent hitting who came with multiple years of control and was in Houston’s prospect price range, I’d be interested. But I just don’t view any of the available multiyear options as a meaningful upgrade from Yuli/Matijevic, and I expect Bell be to be too expensive to justify the move for Houston (given he’d mean a demotion for Yuli). I do think Contreras makes sense for Houston as a replacement for Castro and a guy who can lengthen the lineup to mitigate Yuli’s risk. Between being the primary backup for Maldy, Yordan, and Brantley and pinch hitting for Maldy when they’re behind late, I think he would have a lot of value on this roster. And I don’t relish the potential reality of going into the playoffs with Lee as the starting C (especially considering we don’t know much about Castro’s injury). It just depends on the price. A team who views their catching need as more pressing will likely be willing/able to outbid Houston.
I didn’t realize Yuli is at -5 OAA this season. Maybe at least one of Jones and Matijevic can field the position even if none hit.
Maldy has been doing amazing at the plate. His bat has been crucial in starting things going for us offensively in the last few days, which makes the obvious wrong statement "we don't need offence from the C spot" even more of a joke. Regardless of whether we go for an upgrade, Maldy picking it up is great to see, it makes us even more dangerous. As for Yuli, still don't see the need to make him a sub. Yesterday he had an amazing long ass at bat were he kept fouling borderline pitches to stay alive, then he finally got the hit, vintage Gurriel. I still believe in his hitting approach and skill. Now if you told me that the white sox who are imploding, sell Abreu and we can add him and give him 1b/dh abs, and make Yuli a 1b and utility guy, and we play less of Dubon, then I can see it. If the white sox sell, do you think we would be even open to add big salary, multiple year guys like Hendriks/Graveman to the bullpen, when numbers say we are already elite? Or we would be more likely to add cheap/good deal relievers if available?
You're a big believer in Matijevic? What gives you this belief? Not disagreeing with you. Exactly why Click should trade for Contreras and he shouldn't let himself get outbid. When you have a chance to get a ring you do what it takes to give yourself the best chance of winning a championship as possible.
Was. He's having his worst defensive season at first this year For me, I wouldn't bet money on him being a decent starter, given that he projects to strike our nearly +30% of the time in the majors. But, you can't really make a judgement call at all about him. The man still hasn't reached 30 AB. After only 30 AB, Tucker and Bregman looked like busts and Meyers looked like Mike Trout Jr.
Urquidy is an over pay for Josh Bell. A couple beat writers have said as much. But I would do almost anything to acquire him to replace Yuli. I would also sign him to a decent deal to stay. If Yuli wanted to come back I would but him in a utility role. Maybe a Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel type of deal? The Blue Jays need pitching and we have a surplus Might be a good spot for Odorizzi or Urquidy?
Wondering if a Package of Chas McCormick, Jose Urquidy, Jake Odorizzi and Korey Lee would be enough for Loudes Gurriel, Gabriel Moreno and Cavan Biggio would work????
Have great love for Craig but Cavan is a minor leaguers. No interest in him. Also: the team has 6 starting pitchers now. Nobody can be sure if Lance will be able to return to the rotation this season or when if he does. You really want to leave the team with only 4 starting pitchers? There is Brown but a playoff race is not where you want to count on a prospect as one of 5 in the rotation.
I would just add him to have him and see if he can get turned around with our system he is very very versatile and would be a great bench piece
I would gladly give up a lottery ticket like Zach Daniels for him, if he did not need to be on the 40 man. But not in a major league deal. I like both Gurriel Jr. ( as a bench/ LF platoon ) and Montero but unless Lance is healthy and ready to return or they settle for 1 starter in the package the Astros hurt their World Series chances too much. And my biggest issue would be not being able to keep the starters fresh by using a 6 man rotation. I think JV bring fatigued has hurt our chances in the past and Framber was totally gassed in the Series last year.
How about Jake Odorizzi, Chas McCormick, Korey Lee, Peter Solomon, and Enoli Paredes for Gurriel and Montero? Generally, teams in contention don't make trades that weaken their MLB roster. Toronto would need to view the deal as improving now as much as the future. They have a big pitching need and get a solid but not top of the rotation veteran starter and a high ceiling MLB ready bullpen arm. They also get a lottery ticket starter prospect who is having a down year but has pitched in MLB and has been viewed as a viable MLB arm. They give up their left fielder but get a slightly less replacement in McCormick. They give up their top prospect catcher but they have the best catcher in MLB now and get another highly regarded catching prospect, that is a step down but viable. I think it's about if they feel Odorizzi is enough of an upgrade or they produce a bigger name bigger impact starter And If they feel McCormick is an adequate replacement for Gurriel.
Blue Jays are looking high and low for a SP or 2. This is why I said what I said this would actually help both teams Gurriel is also Versatile .
This seems like a weird, unnecessarily complicated trade that two contenders wouldn't make. Catcher prospect swaps, Starting OFer swaps, Trading 2 starters to marginally upgrade the OF and get a marginally better catching prospect. Doesn't seem like there's enough upside to justify making this type of trade. There's a decent amount of possible downside for both teams too. I'd lump this as another "Astros trade their spare parts for better players" trade proposal. These trades don't happen. Peter Solomon and Enoli Paredes are pure spare parts/throw-ins. They're not even getting run on the Astros active roster; why would another playoff team want them? From the Blue Jays perspective, why would they downgrade OFers and catching prospects just to get Jake freaking Odorizzi. If the Astros are lucky they'll get a B-grade prospect for Odo. Teams don't need to give up starters and swap prospects to get him.
